Here's what Times reporter Kathryn Shattuck had to say about this remarkable young artist: Christopher Taylor: Seeking Adventure for Fingers and Mind By KATHRYN SHATTUCK Those who know the pianist Christopher Taylor tend to speak of him in the hushed, reverent tones typically reserved for natural wonders if not the otherworldly. Colleagues trip over words like "innocence," "fervor," "beauty" and "vision" in an attempt to capture his elusive personality. Critics praise his virtuosity, his cerebral interpretations tempered by an aching tenderness, his unconventional programming and his advocacy of late-20th-century music. Mr. Taylor's bold individuality may never have been more evident than at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1993, where he took the bronze medal, becoming the first American to place in the event since 1981. In a year when Rachmaninoff dominated the concerto round, Mr. Taylor bucked the trend with renditions of the Brahms B flat and the Bach D minor. He saved his Rachmaninoff, an "Étude-Tableau," for an encore. Mr. Taylor " Kit to his friends " has always had a mind of his own. "I have described Kit as a kind of Parsifal with a computer mind, with a tremendous innocence in what he projects in music and a fervent belief and devotion that shows in certain works with tremendous conviction," said the pianist Russell Sherman, with whom Mr. Taylor studied on and off for a decade. "He is one of those strange genius types but very well balanced. The basic package is powerful."

Extractions: The Waterline Have you ever seen a 50 ft brushstroke or a 3 ft thumb? Well you can at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Located on the south side of the National Mall, the bold design of the Hirshhorn Museum stands about 82 ft high and 231 ft in diameter. This hollow cylinder is home to more than 11,000 works of art from the late 19th century to the present. In 1938, Congress agreed on a new gallery within the Smithsonian Institute that would hold contemporary art. 30 years after the idea took root, a Latvian-born immigrant donated his art collection to the United States. John H. Hirshhorn donated more than 4,000 paintings and sculptures. This gift made it possible to start building a museum to house these works of art. In 1969, with funds from Congress and a million dollar donation from Hirshhorn, the construction of the new museum began and in October of 1974 the Horshhorn Museum opened.

Brigade, hadde sitt eget musikkorps med aner helt tilbake til 1734. Oscar Borg, en av byens egne sønner, ble dirigent for dette anerkjente ensemblet i 1881. Borg fungerte også som kordirigent, organist, arrangør og komponist. Borg er først og fremst kjent som en unik marsjkomponist med en særegen lett og lys blåserklang som sitt musikalske varemerke. Han var også interessert i samtidig amerikansk musikk, noe som brakte tidlige, og historisk viktige, jazzimpulser til Norge. Som komponist har Oscar Borg fått tilnavnet Norges Marsjkonge, og etterlot seg flere hundre ulike og unike komposisjoner. På denne innspillingen med musikk av Oscar Borg får vi høre mange kjente og kjære marsjer, men også mer ukjent underholdningsmusikk, inkl. en forrykende Jernbane-Galop. Extractions: True, the Russian composer Alexander Skryabin (1872-1915) was far ahead of his time. Not only was he an important innovator of the musical language and did he conceive a wholly new approach to tonality. He also made the first attempt in history into the multimedia field. The score of his op. 60 for piano solo, large orchestra and choir, includes a two-voiced part, luce, consisting of notes (pitches) without any further indications. Historical sources prove that the composer supposed the use of a colour keyboard, an instrument that had been constructed in 1895 by the British scientist Wallace Rimington. It is also known that Skryabin possessed the synaesthetic ability to associate the hearing of a certain sound with a certain colour. Thus he made his own scale of colours where each pitch in the circle of fifths is represented by its own, specific colour.
