Extractions: Ravel Rhapsodie espagnole In the Janacek's Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen , Vladimir Ashkenazy did not seem to be really conducting or leading the orchestra; he had no sense of the dramatic contour of the work, sounding as it did so totally disjointed and uncoordinated. A disappointing start to the evening. Things improved somewhat with Ravels Piano Concerto in G, played with great passion and precision by Helene Grimaud; this wonderful pianist combines great intelligence with a dazzling technique, her incredibly nimble fingers making short work of even the most difficult arpeggios. Unlike her conductor, she had total control, flare and rhythmic vitality. Unfortunately, sometimes her playing was engulfed by the hall's notoriously dry acoustic, and on occasion even drowned out by the orchestras excessively loud playing, due entirely to Ashkenazy's bombastic conducting. Being a renowned pianist himself, fellow feeling at least should have produced a far more sympathetic and sensitive accompaniment.

AUTOS Steven Winn, Joshua Kosman Sunday, May 8, 2005 view chart JORDI SAVALl The American composer George Antheil, the self-described "bad boy of music," remains almost exclusively known for his extravagantly technological "Ballet mécanique" (well, that and the torpedo he invented in collaboration with Hedy Lamarr). But Charles Amirkhanian, executive director of the Other Minds festival, has been beating the drum for his other works for years, and this vibrant, entertaining disc (available at www.otherminds.org ) makes a strong case for at least some of Antheil's string quartets. The best music the first two string quartets and a suave bauble called "Lithuanian Night" dates from the composer's time in Paris in the 1920s, and it boasts punchy rhythms and an engagingly sassy approach to counterpoint; only the Third Quartet, from 1948, sounds fat and torpid. The Del Sol String Quartet plays like gangbusters throughout. Joshua Kosman. Bass-baritone Bryn Terfel's newest recital disc of English songs is a grab bag of almost comic omnivorousness; aside from a bevy of short Housman settings by Arthur Somervell, none of the program's dozen composers is represented by more than three songs. Yet the range is not too broad there is a distinctive feel to the folk-drenched song repertory produced during the first half of the 20th century and Terfel helps by putting his personal stamp on the entire proceedings. Accompanied with alluring vigor by pianist Malcolm Martineau, Terfel offers readings that are at once capacious and detailed, with phrases that are no less precisely calibrated for being so bold and swaggering. In the "Three Salt-Water Ballads" by Frederick Keel, Terfel plays the sea dog to the hilt, with enjoyably hammy effects; in three of Britten's folksong arrangements, his singing is sensitive and true. Joshua Kosman.

The Third (as it will be known for the rest of this article) was completed as a major composition which Rachmaninoff would "show off" in New York in 1909 during his first concert tour of USA. He wrote the work in the peace of his family's country estate, Ivanovka, and it was completed on 23 September 1909 (Julian Calendar).
Shostakovich Piano/Violin Music Nocturne from The Limpid Stream. Aphorisms, Op. 13. Polka from The Golden Age.vladimir ashkenazy, pianist DECCA B000184602 (F) (DDD) TT 6143 http://classicalcdreview.com/dsash.html
Extractions: avant-garde earlier pieces that proclaimed him both as a prodigy and an enfant terrible . The most advanced of these were the 10 Aphorisms of 1927, a world apart from the Three Fantastic Dances (1920-22) and the five early Preludes (1919-21). Ashkenazy adds a series of transcriptions including the Spanish Dance from The Gadfly , and ends with the saucy Polka from The Golden Age Aphorisms ). In an age when pianists have turned to conducting with increasing frequency, Ashkenazy is virtually alone in keeping up his keyboard technique, and Decca recorded his recital in Potton Hall in Suffolk with dead-on accuracy in matching subject matter and its execution. Likewise recommended.

Extractions: "Opus 1" MUSIC: Beethoven: beginning of Beethoven: played by Isaac Stern, Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose [Sony Classical SM2K 64510, disc 1, track 20] Welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. The music in the background is the beginning of the Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in E-flat, Opus 1, Number 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. The performance is by Isaac Stern, violinist; Leonard Rose on cello and pianist Eugene Istomin. The reason I'm beginning this hour with this particular work is because it is Beethoven's opus one, and "Opus 1" is the theme for this program. The word "opus" is Latin for "work." It is used in English to indicate a literary or musical work or composition. Although you might talk about a book being the author's first opus, books are not given an opus number the way musical compositions are. Opus 1 usually indicates the composer's first published work, not the first work he composed. An author's first book is sometimes his best work or the book he is most known for. It is sometimes his or her only book. In the case of musical compositions, it is rare that the composer's first published work is his best or most well-known composition. And I can't think of any classical composer who wrote just one piece of music which was published and became famous - the musical equivalent of Margaret Mitchell's

It was first played by him in New York 1932. The theme is not actually by Corelli. It is an ancient dance melody called La Folia which has been quoted or varied by various composers down the ages, including Bach, Cherubini and Liszt.
