His mother was an amateur pianist and his father an eye doctor. His father tragically died in a riding accident when Claudio was only 1-year old. The family was not wealthy and Claudio's mother was left to support her three children. Lucretia Leon de Arrau was a strong-willed woman and put her music skills to work by offering piano lessons. She kept Claudio with her during these lessons as she could hardly afford child care. As a result, Claudio was soon playing the piano himself and learned to read musical scores before he could read books. Claudio's musical abilities astonished his mother and by age 5 years he was giving recitals. The Chilean Congress approved funds to send Claudio and his family to Europe where he could develop his talent under music masters. A reader tells us, "When a child, Claudio's mother dressed him in velvet suits and long white stockings." He had nothing but scorn for pianists who played the opening of Beethoven's Opus 111 with two hands instead of one because there were fewer risks. If something was technically difficult, Arrau assumed that the composer had written it that way because the difficulties had an expressive value that it was the interpreter's duty to find. Everything glorious I read about Claudio Arrau in these Amazon.com reviews is absolutely true. My CD set arrived this morning, and I just finished listening to Sonata No. 1. I never paid much attention to it before, but Arrau plays each note with such passion, clarity, and sensitivity that it sounds like one of the greatest works - simply because he plays it that way.

Extractions: To say that Claudio Arrau loved to play the piano is by no means an exaggeration. The renowned Chilean concert pianist once said that, as a child, "All I wanted was music. I was even fed at the piano. Otherwise, it seems, I wouldn't eat. I used to play with my mouth open, and my mother used to put food in it." Born in 1903 in a small Chilean village, Arrau was introduced to the piano as a baby; his father had died before Arrau was one and his mother taught piano to support the family. He would listen intently to his mother's lessons and as his prodigious talent became apparent she began to teach him, too. He gave his first recital at age five, playing works by Schumann and Mozart, and two years later performed at a concert in Santiago, Chile, attended by Chilean President Pedro Montt. That year, the Chilean congress awarded him a 10-year scholarship to study music in Berlin, where he was taught by Martin Krause until Krause's death in 1918.

His legendary career, marked by extraordinary performances, accolades and recordings, spanned eight decades. And yet, the pre-war recordings of Arrau exhibit a completely different artistry than those he later made. Arrau's later work, the stereo LP recordings, reveal the seasoned, polished and philosophical master. The early recordings, with much repertoire never played later in his career, demonstrate a young artist taking risks, being spontaneous and displaying great virtuosity. The result is pianism with fire, vitality and drama. return to main menu Liner Notes Wanderer Fantasy Goldberg Variations Spanish Rhapsody Nineteen hundred and twenty-three and 1924 brought Arrau to the United States for the first time, but the tour was not a financial success. He returned to an inflation-ridden Berlin virtually penniless, and struggled to regain his footing. Seeking help, Arrau engaged a Jungian analyst, and a bond between the two was formed which lasted for many years. Through their work together the pianist was able to put his prodigy years behind him, and in 1926 Arrau returned to the Stern Conservatory as a professor of piano, a position which he maintained until 1940. He entered and won the 1927 Concours International de Pianistes Arrau had made only one recording so far, an acoustic Vocalion disc dating from 1921, on which a weighty and almost epic Schubert

Caught at the height of his powers, there seem to be several lifetimes of experience poured into each of these three performances. There are other Arrau recordings of this sonata, of course, possibly most famously on Philips. In addition there was a live Melodiya LP (1968 live), a September 1971 Ascona concert on Ermitage/Aura and a late New York account (Philips Heritage). Yet his is well worth hearing, as an example of Arrau on top form communing with the Master. An invaluable addition to Arraus discography.

Enregistrements 1949, Historical Piano Collection, 199 Dante Productions HPC 141 Playing with few pedal (which is unusual in other pianists playing Debussy) Arrau allows each layer of the polyphony to come out; however, we can hear the Debussyian atmosphere where the different melodic layers have to have independence and unity at the same time. Another thing that shows Arrau's mastery is the change of atmosphere and playing when he plays Ravel. In Ondine and Le Gibet, it is possible to hear a more articulated playing that Ravel's music requires. Arrau's recordings are examples of musical compromise and technical mastery at the same time. With his beautiful and distinctive sound, he was one of the best pianists of the 20th Century, in my opinion.
