Extractions: Reviews Gramophone 10/1997 (Bryce Morrison) DGs Martha Argerich Collection consolidates and confirms (if confirmation were necessary) our sense of a unique vision and virtuosity. Here, simply and assuredly, is one of the most magisterial talents in the entire history of piano playing, so that this 11-disc box and tribute (its contents forever journeying from shelf to CD player) proudly stands next to parallel recorded celebrations of Rachmaninov, Cortot and Horowitz immortal examples of re-creative genius. Then, I am reminded of how Argerichs favoured partners (here, Freire and Economou as well as her conductors) are propelled into a commitment that must surely astonish them in retrospect ... Gramophone NB: This recording refers to an earlier release of the Ravel and Prokofiev Concerto performances included in the box set pictured above. There have been others to match the bustle and brilliance of Argerich's Prokofiev, her coloristic range, her drive, her flashiness, her straining at the leash. But I'm not sure I could name anyone who has so satisfyingly combined all those qualities, who has given us such a rocket-launched recapitulation in the first movement, such circus-routine vividness in the following variations (Prokofiev grew up in a Russia where 'circusization of the arts' was one of the 'in' concepts), or such monstrous, hyperbolic fairy-tale imagery in the finale, and all done with the most engaging reckless abandon. The Ravel Concerto is another bundle of energy. I had forgotten how miraculous is the blend and interplay of piano and orchestra, and how ecstatically Argerich weaves around the cor anglais restatement in the slow movement.

This April 2003 recording made in Flagey Hall in Brussels of performances by cellist Mischa Maisky and pianist Martha Argerich is certainly among the best performances ever made of this repertoire. Indeed, only the Rostropovich and Shostakovich performances can compare with them and, even there, it is arguable that Maisky and Argerich's are equally convincing. And equally original: while Maisky is a supreme technician, he is also the most fervent living cellist; while Argerich is beyond virtuosity, she is also the most passionate living pianist; and while there have been great, even definitive, recordings of all these works before, Maisky and Argerich are so commanding and so compelling and so overwhelming that comparisons are pointless. Superbly programmed and translucently recorded, this disc certainly should be heard by anyone who loves great performances of great music. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide

Even discounting the irrepressible exuberance of pianist Argerich and the unending enthusiasm of cellist Maisky, isn't their performance here a little bit too much like a couple of showoffs grandstanding? And don't they just walk all over violinist Capuçon, making him an accompanist in his own concerto? And don't they just run all over conductor Rabinovitch-Barakovsky, making the accompanist a timekeeper in a symphonic concerto? Stick with the Richter/Oistrakh/Rostropovich/Karajan, a true partnership of interpretative equals.

Extractions: Great Performers Series - SF Symphony by Lyn Bronson The above photo shows the calm before the storm as pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire were about to exit the green room and step out on the stage of Davies Hall in San Francisco. Every seat in the hall was occupied and the feeling of anticipation was intense, especially since this same duo had been scheduled to play in the same venue two years previously and had cancelled for reasons of health. We were witnessing the magic moment of heightened anticipation when the house lights were lowered and the stage door opened, just before the audience erupted into a firestorm of applause and roared greetings such as few classical musicians ever enjoy. As pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire appeared, the event seemed to have something in common with ancient scenes in the Roman Coliseum, except that it wasnt two gladiators doing battle with lions, but two pianists of cult hero status emerging to do battle with two Steinway concert grands and treating their fans to an evening of piano music that alternated between heroic drama and sublime serenity. Here were two artists who have known each other since their teens and have been over the years occasionally taking time off from their busy careers to play piano ensemble on a high artistic level. Each pianist has developed a distinct personality: Argerich as a mercurial and inspired artist whose freedom of expression and imagination seemingly knows no bounds, and Nelson Freire as a suave and intense magician at the keyboard who plays effortlessly and makes the most extraordinary pianistic difficulties come to life and seem like childs play.

Extractions: Pianist Recognized as one of the greatest pianists of our time, Martha Argerich has had a colourful career pursued with a singular vision. Though dogged by recurrent ill health in recent years Argerich is playing with a passion and insight accorded few artists in any field. She has always been a maverick and her discography reflects her wide-ranging interests. She was a child prodigy, playing in public from the age of five. However, after her initial international successes in the late 1950s she retired from concert giving in 1960 for four years for further study. When she returned to the platform it was with a blazing energy that has rarely faltered since. Argerich is known as a virtuoso with a penetrating musical intellect. She has recorded not nearly as often as her fans would prefer, but most of her discs have achieved legendary status. Of particular note is her debut DG recording which has never left the catalogue in thirty-five years and her more recent recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No 3 with Riccardo Chailly on Philips which has been a worldwide best seller. Argereich is also a committed chamber music maker and she has collaborated with nearly all the important instrumentalists of her generation including Mstislav Rostropovich and Gidon Kremer, well documented on disc.

The Schumann is a less happy affair: theres so much pushing and pulling with the tempos, sudden dynamic changes, and odd rhythmic accents that any sense of line or phrasing goes out the window. There are a few exciting moments, and some unusual details emerge from Argerichs playing. But this concerto needs coordination and control more than fireworks, and after a while, all the octane comes to seem pretty one-dimensional. Rabinovitch-Barakovsky manages to keep orchestra and soloist together most of the time, which is a feat in itself, but cant give the movements much overall shape. Perhaps the performance made more of an impact live the audience seemed to think so. (Martha Argerich and Alexander Gurning play a duo recital this Wednesday, August 25, at Seiji Ozawa Hall, and they appear with the Boston Symphony Orchestra next Friday, August 27, at the Koussevitzky Music Shed, both at Tanglewood; call 888-266-1200.)

Extractions: I was at the kindergarten in a competitive program when I was two years and eight months. I was much younger than the rest of the children. I had a little friend who was always teasing me; he was five and was always telling me, "You can't do this, you can't do that." And I would always do whatever he said I couldn't. Once he got the idea of telling me I couldn't play the piano. (Laughter) That's how it started. I still remember it. I immediately got up, went to the piano, and started playing a tune that the teacher was playing all the time. I played the tune by ear and perfectly. The teacher immediately called my mother and they started making a fuss. And it was all because of this boy who said, "You can't play the piano." Later, yes I was and I hated it. I didn't want to be a pianist in the first place. I still don't really want to be, but it is the only thing that I can do more or less. (Laughter) I wanted to be a doctor! I love very much to play the piano, but I don't like to be a pianist. I don't like the profession. And when one plays, of course, it is important to practice. But the profession itself - the traveling and the way of life - all this has nothing to do with playing or with music, absolutely nothing! This is what I do not enjoy about being a concert pianist. You never know when you are very young, when you are studying, what this profession is about. No one tells you, and the people outside the profession don't have a clue. They think it is marvelous.

Extractions: Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She began piano lessons at the age of five, studying with Vincenzo Scaramuzza, and displayed her genius. When she was eight years old, she made her debut as a pianist playing piano concertos composed by Mozart and Beethoven. In 1955, Argerich moved with her family to Europe where she continued her studies with Magaloff, Gulda,Mrs. Lipatti, Stefan Askenase and Michelangeli. In 1957, Argerich won the Geneva International Competition, and then she began to give concerts actively. In 1965, Argerich won the first prize at the Chopin Competition, which establised her indisputable prestige as a pianist in the world. Since then, she has been one of the most prominent pianists in the world in both popularity and ability. Argerich has been rated highly for her performance of the virtuoso piano literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. Argerich's repertoires range very widely to the extent they cover from Bach through Messiaen. Argerich always has invitations from renowned orchestras, conductors and music festivals in Europe, Japan and the United States. She has also made chamber music a significant part of her musical life. She regularly plays duos with violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky. She also plays many pieces for two pianos and for four-hands with Nelson Freire and Alexandre Rabinovitch. Since 1994, Argerich has served as Honorary Music Director of the Philharmonia Hall at Beppu B-Con Plaza in Japan. In 1995, she gave her first solo recital in ten years, which music fans around the world had waited for, at the "Beppu Argerich Concert '95". The Concert drew much attention throughout the world. In 1996, she was decorated with the Order of Artistic and Cultural Merits by the government of France. In 1997, she was appointed as a member of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In September 1997, Alexandre Dossin was the youngest person ever to receive the prestigious State Award "Ambassador of Rio Grande do Sul" in Brazil, and in 1998 he was the only student in the University of Texas at Austin School of Music (among 700 students) to receive the Graduate Pre-Emptive Fellowship. Alexandre Dossin in listed in "Who's Who in America." The American Record Guide, one of the most important publications in the recording industry, recently reviewed Alexandre Dossin's CD recording of works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt and Prokofiev. "There is no denying that he has the dexterity and musical skills to bring this diverse collection off," wrote Alan Becker in the January/February 2004 issue of the American Record Guide. "He also eschews showiness and emphasizes refinement in all of these works." According to Becker, Dossin's best was illustrated in his performance of Listz's "Dante Sonata," where "all the ferocious difficulties are conquered without compromising musical values." He also wrote that "Dossin's Chopin is a model of how to avoid eccentricities and let the music speak for itself." "It is doubtful listeners will be able to resist once they have listened,"Becker concluded.
Extractions: Full Review I have had this CD for eons, and I listen to it every other day. There really is no criticism I can make, and I constantly refer to Argerich for insight and interpretation. Her Prokofiev Toccata is of the most exciting playing around - practically flawless. She covers it all, from Brahms to Prokofiev to Ravel. The Chopin Scherzo No. 3 is taken at a breathtaking speed, of course I wouldn't know, since Argerich's was the first I ever heard. When I hear any other performance of the scherzo, I am immediately struck by the lack of movement, and I begin to miss Argerich. Her Liszt B Minor Sonata is not a show piece, despite its technical difficulties. There is an obvious epic quality about her performance of it that has been proved time and time again to be peerless. One can actually feel the structure of the Sonata, in it's tedious half-hour.
