The T c decreases with Al doping to around 10% Al, and superconductivity ceases at 30% Al. Intriguingly, there are clear indications of structural instability associated with the disappearance of superconductivity. As a measure of the excitement caused by the discovery of this new superconductor, it was the subject of an extra session added to this week's meeting of the American Physical Society. A crystal of C molecules normally has a lattice spacing of 1.415 nm and becomes superconducting at a temperature of 18 K. But by obliging the crystal to conduct with holes instead of electrons (in a transistor-like setup) and by adding other molecular species to space out the buckyballs a bit, the superconductivity transition temperature can be raised. Batlogg and his colleagues at Lucent, the University of Konstanz (Germany), and the ETH lab in Zurich, have tried a number of candidates; the best so far is a dopant consisting of tribromo-methane (Br et al. Science , published online, 30 August).

The magnets that levitate these trains are an application of superconductivity Metals are good conductors of electric current. That is, they have very low electrical resistance, but this resistance is not zero. A voltage difference is still required to generate the current in the metal, and the metal heats up while the current is flowing. The electrical resistance of an object depends on its temperature and declines slowly as the temperature falls. Early in the last century, however, a Dutch physicist discovered that a sample of mercury, when cooled below a certain temperature close to absolute zero, loses all electrical resistance. When the mercury is in this state, an electric current flows indefinitely, even in the absence of any applied voltage. This effect is called "superconductivity." The table lists the everyday metals that exhibit superconductivity and the temperature below which electrical resistance disappears. These elements require cooling by liquid helium to become superconductors. Such materials are called "low-temperature superconductors." Much later, in the 1980s, physicists discovered ceramic compounds that exhibit superconductivity at temperatures as high as -145º Celsius. This temperature is high enough that the materials need be cooled only with liquid nitrogen, which is far less expensive to do than with liquid helium.

The research team included scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Tokyo. Their results are reported in the February 17, 2000 issue of the journal Nature. FIRST-EVER STM IMAGES OF A 2-D LAYER OF COPPER OXIDE DOPED WITH A SINGLE ZINC IMPURITY ATOM SHOW A CROSS-SHAPED "QUASI-PARTICLE" (FREE-ELECTRON) CLOUD CENTERED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE ATOM OF ZINC. THESE ELECTRON-CLOUD IMAGES ARE PROVIDING VALUABLE NEW INFORMATION ON THE PHYSICS BEHIND HIGH-TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. The discovery in 1986 of a new class of superconductors materials in which electrical resistance drops to zero when cooled below a critical temperature (symbolized as Tc) conjured visions of magnetically levitated high-speed trains and dirt-cheap electrical power. Made from ceramic copper oxides rather than the metal alloys of previous superconductors, these new high-Tc superconductors hold promise for superconductivity at room temperatures. For room-temperature materials to ever be realized, however, scientists need a better understanding of the physics behind high-Tc superconductivity.
