The figure shows a sequence of absorption images; the temperature of the Rb gas decreases as the labels increase from "1" to "12." The BEC first emerges at image "4" (around 150 nK and 300,000 atoms), and the thermal gas disappears in the final two images. Funding for this work was provided by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the University of Illinois.
