It was written in the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) world of the Cold War, when we all knew that friction between NATO and the Warsaw Pact might at any time provoke the use of nuclear weapons to wipe the earth ten times over. That prospect was a constant backdrop to our lives then, as it isn't now: the weapons still exist, of course, and madmen, terrorists, dictators and ideologues might still acquire and threaten to use them; but at least we no longer live in states whose defence relies on deterring enemies by threatening to destroy the world if they attack. This too is why spies are less fascinating now than they were in Bond's heyday, when the stakes they played for were apparently so much higher.

Many consider him the greatest experimentalist who ever lived. Several concepts that he derived directly from experiments, such as lines of magnetic force, have become common ideas in modern physics. Faraday was born at Newington, Surrey, near London. He received little more than a primary education, and at the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a bookbinder. There he became interested in the physical and chemical works of the time. After hearing a lecture by the famous chemist Humphry Davy, he sent Davy the notes he had made of his lectures. As a result Faraday was appointed, at the age of 21, assistant to Davy in the laboratory of the Royal Institution in London. During the initial years of his scientific work, Faraday occupied himself mainly with chemical problems. He discovered two new chlorides of carbon and succeeded in liquefying chlorine and other gases. He isolated benzene in 1825, the year in which he was appointed director of the laboratory. Davy, who had the greatest influence on Faraday's thinking, had shown in 1807 that the metals sodium and potassium can be precipitated from their compounds by an electric current, a process known as electrolysis. Faraday's vigorous pursuit of these experiments led in 1834 to what became known as Faraday's laws of electrolysis.

It organizes otherwise fragmentary thought in a context, it demonstrates the nature of philosophical "progress" via reasoned criticism, and it stresses the continuity between the earliest themes in Western philosophy and the questions that captured later thinkers. The view also has some problems. If Milesian Philosphy focused on these three questions, it is difficult to explain either Anaximander's detailed cosmology, with its (pardon the pun) limited reference to the Unlimited ( APERION ) or Anaximines' rejection of Anaximander's compelling arguments. As far as Anaximander is concerned, the APERION does not seem to provide adequate basis for his concern with cylces, opposites, and imbalances. As for Anaximander, although his philosophy appears to have been markedly less abstract than that of his predecessor, he does seem to have concentrated on observable transformations. It may not be too great an exaggeration to say that Anaximines took up the scientific clues in Anaxminader's work, and that these interested him more than the more metaphysical and speculative concepts.
