The purpose of this series of schools is to address the physics and technology issues of this field, train young people and at the same time provide a forum for discussions on recent advances for scientists active in this field. The subjects chosen for this first course reflect the recent interest in TeV electron positron colliders, the possibility offered by Free Electron Lasers to power them and the developments in the production of high brightness electron beams.

Typically, one has to deal with the propagation of a wave having a wavelength of the order of m , over distances of the order m to m . In these situations, the propagation produces both a short-scale oscillation and exhibits a long term trend (drift, dispersion, nonlinear interaction with the medium, or so), which contains the physically important feature. For this reason, one needs to develop ways of filtering the irrelevant high-oscillations, and to build up models and/or numerical schemes that do give information on the long-term behavior. In other terms, one needs to develop high-frequency models and/or high-frequency schemes. This task has been partially performed in the context of a contract with Alcatel, in that we developed a new numerical scheme to discretize directly the high-frequency model derived from physical laws. Generally speaking, the demand in developing such models or schemes in the context of laser physics, or laser/matter interaction, is large. It involves both modeling and numerics (description of oscillations, structure preserving algorithms to capture the long-time behaviour, etc).

This course is suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, especially those with a limited background in lasers and optics. Successful completion of this course carries 1.5 semester hours of Cornell University graduate credit. Prerequisites: Introductory Physics, Modern Physics and Calculus. Some background in Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism and Optics is helpful but not required. Objectives This course will explore the basic principles of how lasers work, with a particular emphasis on their design, construction and operation. The fundamental interaction of light with matter will be discussed, and the mechanism for generating and control lasing action will be described. Students will understand how a laser works from first principles and how laser light differs from other forms of radiation. They will also learn how pulsed lasers work, and what limits their pulse width and output power. Finally, they will be introduced to a range of scientific and industrial applications, where the particular qualities of the light output make the laser indispensable. Instructional Method

Lamb Medal for Laser Physics, in recognition of pioneering research he conducted at Bell Labs in the 1960s. Also receiving the award earlier this month, at the 29th Winter Colloquium on the Physics of Quantum Electronics in Snowbird, Utah, were Lorenzo Narducci and Herbert Walther. Melvin Lax (This photograph is also available at high-resolution A distinguished professor of physics at the City College of New York since 1971, Lax has been affiliated with Bell Labs for 44 years. He worked at Bell Labs from 1955 to 1972 and remains a consultant. Lorenzo Narducci is Davis Professor of Physics at Drexel University in Philadelphia; Herbert Walther is Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich, Germany. Less than five years after the invention of the laser, Lax began publishing a series of theoretical papers that proved fundamental to the scientific understanding of this new class of device. Narducci and Walther have applied Lax's theoretical work in recent years. "Mel Lax is one of the fathers of quantum optics," said Dick Slusher, head of Optical Physics Research, the Bell Labs department with which Lax is currently associated. "When I was starting out in this field, his work was required reading, as part of a very small set of seminal papers describing how lasers worked."
