When the last of its 192 beams is installed in 2008, NIF will offer unique capabilities, including the most energy of any laser facility in the world. With its ability to provide a variety of laser pulse shapes and lengths, including the proposed ultrashort, petawatt pulses, NIF also will offer more power than any other laser facility. When Nova operated with ultraviolet light, it produced 30 kilojoules of energy and 25 terawatts of power. In contrast, the 192-beam NIF will generate 1.8 megajoules and 500 terawatts. LLNL technology has supplied the seed for other large glass laser efforts in the United States, including the Omega laser at the University of Rochester in New York and the Beamlet laser now at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, NM. Extractions: T he Columbia Condensed Matter Physics group investigates the fundamental physics of matter in nanostructures, low dimensional semiconductors and novel materials, using a full range of experimental and theoretical techniques. Here are some brief summaries of our current research efforts. The condensed matter group uses a number of facilities on the Columbia campus and at national and industrial labs throughout North America. We concern ourselves with the electronic properties of lower-dimensional electron systems as they occur in semiconductors and also in extended molecules. Two-dimensional electron systems at the interface of ultra-pure semiconductors show fascinating properties such as the fractional quantum Hall effect and quantum phase transitions. We are getting increasingly involved in the mesoscopic electronic and thermal transport in various nanoscale systems including organic molecules, carbon nanotubes and other one-dimensional quantum wires using state-of-art modern nanofabrication processes. Such research and development laboratories are found in the fields of the analytical sciences, materials, ecology, pollution and medicine. During the first three years you follow a combination of prescribed modules in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Computer Literacy, of which the Mathematics and Chemistry modules are taught only in the first two years. In addition you follow a number of selected modules in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. For the third year this selection is extended with modules in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. For the fourth year there are only prescribed modules in Physics, Atomic Physics and the Philosophy of Science. This is a four-year programme which leads to a BScHons degree, but after three successful years you will have obtained a BSc degree which provides an exit qualification.

An important research area of the laser group is the application of laser ablation to deposit thin films of superconducting and magnetic materials.
