    Extractions: Historians of science are generally unaware of the contributions of India to physics. The main reason for this is that very little research has been done on the subject in the recent past, a consequence of the fact that there are few history of science departments in Indian universities. The objective of this paper is to present a preliminary outline of early history of physics in India. The schools of Vaisheshika and Samkhya, that were interested in general principles of atomic theory and cosmology, are discussed.     Extractions: SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

During the first centuries of its existence the lectures on physics and astronomy were held in the arts (now philosophy) faculty. The outstanding personalities were Christian of Prachatice (1366-1439), a close friend of Master Jan Hus, and Jan Ondrejuv called Sindel (1375-1454). They were concerned with astronomical observations. Sindel's measurements of the planets and the Sun were so accurate that they were still praised by Tycho Brahe two centuries later. The high level of science in Prague at that time is confirmed by sophisticated Prague Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall - the medieval planetarium. It was made according to Sindel's plans by the clockmaster Mikulas of Kadan in 1410. During the religiously tolerant reign of Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1612) who was interested in science and arts, favourable conditions for the development of natural sciences were established. The personal physician of Rudolph II and astronomer Tadeas Hajek of Hajek (1525-1600) published his studies of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopea in 1572.
