Extractions: The faculty and students of the Physics Department engage in theoretical and experimental research that spans most of the central topics of modern physics. We have substantial groups of people working in the areas of theoretical and observational cosmology, theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, experimental high-energy physics, theoretical particle physics and string theory, experimental atomic and nuclear physics, mathematical physics and, finally, biological physics. The department has decades-old traditions of excellence and leadership in the core areas of fundamental physics and it is also rapidly building strength in newer areas, such as biological physics and materials science. In the newer areas, interaction between Physics and other departments is critical and major university-supported interdisciplinary initiatives provide a strong framework for this cooperation. Each research group consists of several senior faculty members working closely with junior faculty and graduate students and, often, with undergraduates doing their their junior paper and senior thesis projects. The work is done mainly in the Joseph Henry Laboratories of Jadwin Hall on campus but also at laboratories and instruments around the world, from the South Pole to Earth orbit. The excitement and quality of the research that is done here creates an exceptional learning environment for students at all levels. HFIR Center For Neutron Scattering
The neutron scattering facilities of the high flux research reactor are available for outside users on problems of scientific merit. Although the main purpose of the HFIR is to produce transplutonium elements for use in industry, medicine and research, the reactor's extremely high flux also makes it a source of neutrons for condensed matter investigations.

We have discovered a new and promising approach for fabrication of spatially-ordered functional two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures on surfaces of crystalline solids... Complete Feature Direct-write assembly of 3D microwebs comprised of charged polyelectrolyte filaments has been demonstrated using fluid inks that readily flow through fine deposition nozzles (~ 1 µm diameter or less), and then rapidly solidify in a coagulation reservoir. We have performed a fundamental study of the epitaxial assembly of crack-free 3-D colloidal crystals containing very low vacancy concentrations from binary mixtures of colloidal microspheres and highly charged nanoparticles into patterned substrates created by focused ion beam milling.

Students with strong backgrounds in condensed matter physics are often well qualified for research and engineering positions in industry, as well as for academic careers. Experimental condensed matter physics at Tufts focuses on the magnetic properties of materials, structural properties and phase transitions in polymers, and interactions of atoms and molecules with metal surfaces. On-site facilities are housed in the modern Science and Technology Center , and include SQUID and vibrating-sample magnetometers, X-ray diffractometers, and ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis equipment. Researchers at Tufts also collaborate widely, traveling to Brookhaven National Laboratory and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, as well as to other universities in the United States France and Brazil Theoretical work at Tufts is concerned with the dynamic behavior of spin systems, including transitions caused both by thermally activitated processes and by quantum tunneling.

Auchincloss and Arie Bodek The Physics and Astronomy Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program is funded by the National Science Foundation to support ten to twelve highly-qualified students to undertake supervised research projects in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for a period of 10 weeks each summer. Departmental faculty conduct research in diverse experimental and theoretical areas, including Biological Physics Condensed Matter Physics High Energy Physics Nuclear Physics ... Quantum Optics , and Physics Education. Each summer, the Department's research effort involves approximately 20 undergraduate students, in addition to approximately 120 graduate students, 35 postdoctoral research associates, and 30 regular faculty members. Much of the research performed by past undergraduate research assistants has been published in scientific journals. Many students have also presented their work at national conferences and undergraduate research symposia at the University of Rochester. Program : Over the 10-week summer research period, participants attend a series of informal seminars covering research topics as well as others, such as preparing for graduate school. These seminars are intended to foster discussion among REU students and faculty, and to serve as a basis for further social and scientific interaction. Students whose projects are primarily experimental are encouraged to attend mini-courses in electronics and in machine shop techniques. The core research experience takes place in the context of research groups working at the University's research facilities. Students present their work at an informal symposium at the end of the summer. They are encouraged to work with their research advisers toward completion of publications, submission of abstracts, and presentations of their work at professional and student conferences.
