(phylimhs@nus.edu.sg Current Projects Recurrence methods in solid state physics Sy Hong Kok We have studied many problems in finite superlattices using the method of recurrence equations. Explicit equations were obtained for many problems which can then be solved numerically easily. Some of the problems that have already been studied are (i) Electronic (Tamm) states in semiconductor superlattices, (ii) Plasmons in semiconductor superlattices, (iii) Spin waves in magnetic superlattices, (iv) Curie temperature in magnetic superlattices, and (v) Elastic waves in layered Structures. Real space renormalization of Ising models Sy Hong Kok We have used real space renormalization with the method of cumulants to study long range Ising models in one and two dimensions. Condensed matter physics is the study of the properties of materials formed when large numbers of atoms are condensed into liquid or solid states. The rapid growth of this field reflects the variety of novel properties which occur when many particles are brought together in different ways. Among the new materials discovered in this field are organic and high-T c superconductors, high conductivity polymers, heavy fermion metals, semiconductor systems exhibiting the quantum Hall effect and fractional charges, and fullerenes new carbon-based materials, with completely new properties. Researchers in our condensed matter group have participated in these and many other recent discoveries. Extractions: Rutgers University Department of Physics and Astronomy Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Experimental research on condensed matter physics at Rutgers has a long and distinguished history. The physics department is named after Bernard Serin, who in 1950 discovered the isotope effect in superconductors. Continuing this tradition, the condensed matter experimental (CMX) group is pursuing a vigorous research program on topics at the forefront of modern condensed matter physics. Specifically, the group is actively working on: the synthesis of novel materials, the dynamics of vortex matter, quantum transport and interactions in mesoscopic conductors, the metal-insulator transition and correlated-electron effects, low dimensional quantum magnets, quantum fluids and solids, two-dimensional electron systems, sonoluminescence, colossal magneto-resistance, ferroelectricity, magnetism, and forefront x-ray characterization studies. Several of the condensed matter group are also members of the Laboratory for Surface Modification ( see more about LSM below ) and conduct research at the atomic level in the physics and chemistry of surfaces, interfaces, and thin films, including electronic and structural properties, dynamical processes, and surface catalysis. Our CMX and LSM laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments that give access to ultra-low temperatures, ultra-high vacuum, high magnetic fields, and atomic-resolution imaging.
