The prerequisites for this course are two semesters of introductory physics and three semesters of calculus (the third semester may be taken concurrently). Physics 305 has two hours of lecture and a 3 hour lab each week. Exercises are assigned during the lab. The course is classified as a Writing Intensive course with the writing intensive part of the grade based on a one or two page summary of the weekly exercise. Computational physics is the third branch that together with experimental and theoretical physics makes up physics. While experimental and theoretical physics are disciplines that trace their history centuries ago, computational physics is still very young. Many of us still remember the punch cards that for today's students must seem like the equivalent of the stone axe. Computational physics is today becoming as diversified as - say - experimental physics. For example, the computer plays an indispensible role in the data mining that follow from the experiments at the huge accelerator centers. Another example is the small scale computational physics where one studies algorithmic models of phenomena such as diffusion-limited aggregation using programs that occasionally fit on a single page. In the first case, computational physics constitutes an essential complement to experimental high energy physics, while in the second example, it complements theoretical physics by making problems that are not tractable analytically, possible to study. The Computational Physics Group of the European Physical Society brings together those physicists whose main research tool (apart from their brains) is the computer by sponsoring and arranging conferences and schools on fields of physics where computers are essential.      Extractions: The CCPD is responsible for the development and application of new computational techniques, algorithms, and diagnostics to problems of general interest. The primary areas of activity are in computational gasdynamics, laser plasma interaction, inertial confinement fusion, applications of Monotonic Lagrangian Grid (MLG) to particle codes, solar terrestrial interactions, astrophysics, and electromagnetic and acoustic scattering. Of major interest is the development of Massively Parallel Processing for Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computational Physics. Research is directed to understand the basic physics in the design of high-gain direct drive Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) pellets. In this concept laser light is used to symmetrically implode a spherical pellet to sufficiently high densities and temperatures to achieve thermonuclear fusion. This requires very symmetric illumination and a stable hydrodynamic implosion. Two- and three-dimensional state-of-the-art radiation hydrodynamics codes are being developed and applied study the dynamics of both planar and spherical targets to provide better understanding of how to control the Rayleigh- Taylor instability. This project is part of a DOE program in the Plasma Physics Division where a new 5MJ laser facility with the worlds most uniform high powered laser has recently been brought on line. The results of experiments on that facility will be used to benchmark the codes and provide more confidence in pellet designs.
