The Atomic Century One hundred years ago, a half century before the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the discovery of x rays spotlighted the extraordinary promise, and peril, of the atom. From that time until 1942, atomic research was in private hands. The Second World War and the Manhattan Project, which planned and built the first atomic bombs, transformed a cottage industry of researchers into the largest and one of the most secretive research projects ever undertaken. Scientists who had once raced to publish their results learned to speak in codes accessible only to those with a "need to know." Indeed, during the war the very existence of the man-made element plutonium was a national secret. After the war's end, the network of radiation researchers, government and military officials, and physicians mobilized for the Manhattan Project did not disband. Rather, they began working on government programs to promote both peaceful uses of atomic energy and nuclear weapons development.

Extractions: Department of Physics Research Profile The Department of Physics is strong in both research and teaching. Its research is recognised as internationally excellent, as shown by the award of a 4 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. Most of the externally-derived research funding is competitively won in peer-reviewed processes and about half of the research income is awarded by the Research Councils, making the Department one of the larger mainstream physics departments in the UK. The research programme supports most of the 100 or so Departmental staff, which can be divided into three roughly equal groups: academic staff, research staff, and support staff. There are also a number of eminent visiting and part-time professors, notably Professor Alain Aspect, Carnegie Centenary Professor in the Department. The Department provides a wide range of degree courses, including Physics, Applied Physics, Laser Physics and Optoelectronics, Mathematics and Physics, Physics and Mathematical Finance (MSci), Physics with Visual Simulation (MSci), Photonics (MSci) and Biophysics (MSci). As well as postgraduate study leading to a PhD/MPhil degree, the Department also offers the MRes qualification, obtainable in one year. An EngD in Photonics is also available for those wishing to follow an industrial career path. A commitment to strategic, as well as to fundamental research, has led to success not only in attracting funds from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the EU, but from a wide range of others, including the Wellcome Trust, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Defence Research Agency, Royal Society, Nuffield Foundation, British Nuclear Fuels, Hitachi, Joint European Torus, and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council.

(18851962) Bohr formulated in 1913 an alternative atomic model, in which only certain circular orbits of the electrons are allowed. In this model light is emitted (or absorbed), when an electron makes a transition from one orbit to another. Bohr received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922 for his work on the structure of atoms.
