Cosmology Poem TOWARD A PROPER FOUNDATION FOR PHYSICS (Blueprint of the Material Universe) Stanley Fay White Animation of an experiment T A s the known Physics Knowledge Base has grown, the ability of a single experiment to discover facts internally consistent and compatible with the PKB is proving to be too much water for the individual experiment to carry. There are many reasons for this, but foremost is human error in formulating, performing and in drawing conclusions based solely on an individual experiment. Currently the experimenter is not required to look beyond the immediate experimental data of his experiment to assert that the assumed experimental results are consistent and compatible with the known PKB. There exists a General Knowledge Base of the universe in which all the facts of the material world exist. When one performs an experiment in the material world, one is taking a small slice of reality and investigating its parameters. Due to inevitable human error, there is no way that a single experiment can be absolutely true. A n experiment is similar to a computer sub-program. A sub-program can be internally consistent and still not function in the main program. It is the responsibility of the computer programmer to assure the compatibility of the subs with the main program. At the present level of development of the experiment, there is no "supervisor" to check the subs (the experiments) to make sure that they are compatible with the main (PKB). It is happening too often that the subs (the experiments) are not consistent or compatible with the main (PKB). Two examples: The false information deduced from the "quark" experiments with protons. If anyone had bothered to check with the Avogadro formula, it would have given the lie to quarks in rest protons immediately. The Quantum Theory is similarly flawedbut it wasn't even derived from experiment!

The first, and perhaps most important was that I actually knew very little of the actual subject matter on which the actual 'affect the rest of my life' exams were based. The second thing was more mundane, being that if I didn't actually get on and learn some of it, bad marks would follow, and with them, the inevitable pain of lectures from parents. The third thing, probably the most interesting to you, was the realisation that the incentive of avoiding lectures from parents was not nearly sufficient to force me into studying. The result, however, of all of these combined, was that, instead of actually studying, I decided to sit around a make web pages about all the stuff I would have been studying if I could have been bothered. Buying something from Amazon? Clicking though these links supports this site with a cut of anything you buy today. That was my original introduction, and it still seems to hold up quite well. The notes have brought me acclaim from some, insults from others and hopefully some good karma. I'd also like to thank the other contributors who have helped, and still are helping to improve the quality of the notes, especially those I haven't got around to adding to the page. (

The LIGO project is aimed at detecting and studying gravitational-wave signals from violent astrophysical events, such as supernovae or coalescing neutron stars and black holes. For more information on all aspects of the LIGO project, see the LIGO web site . My work in LIGO is currently focused in two areas. The first is an instrument called the Thermal Noise Interferometer (TNI) , which is a test-bed suspended interferometer at Caltech. We are using this instrument to examine fundamental and technical sources of noise that limit the sensitivity of LIGO. Our second undertaking is a photothermal interferometer for measuring the properties of optical coatings used in the LIGO detectors. The Physics of Crystal Growth and Pattern Formation in Ice. This project is essentially a case study of the growth of ice crystals from the vapor phase, the purpose of which is to better understanding pattern formation in nonlinear nonequilibrim systems. The diverse morphologies seen in snow crystals are largely due to the bizarre temperature dependence of ice crystal growth rates, a phenomenon that was discovered 75 years ago and remains unexplained to this day. We have been making precise measurements of the growth rates of the different facets of ice crystals under controlled conditions to gain insights into the temperature dependent molecular structure of the ice surface and how it affects crystal growth. Extractions: SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

The funding was obtained through a donation of 2.850.000 DKK (approx. US$ 400.000) by the Villum Kann Rasmussen Foundation . The installation was announced in a DTU press release Notice: On May 17, 2004 VALHAL was turned off after 4 1/2 years of eminent service. A new Linux cluster takes up the VALHAL computer room. The supercomputer will be used for quantum mechanical calculations and atomistic simulations of complex materials, enabling the prediction of mechanical, electrical, magnetic and chemical properties. Among other topics, researchers at CAMP will study deformations of materials, catalytic properties of surfaces, and properties of complex biological molecules. Photo showing part of VALHAL.
