Where astronomy traditionally is based on observing, astrophysics applies the principles of physics to ask "why?" and to make predictions. Asking "why?" sounds a lot like " inquiry " doesn't it? It is the intention of this course and this web site to offer students a portal into inquiry in the space sciences. Here you will find many resources developed in-house and many more links to non-IMSA sites. You will not find this site to be an online textbook or a cookie-cutter course aimed at teaching you everything there is to know about astrophysics. It is, instead, your springboard for inquiry into the subject The basic structure of the course is rather fluid. It is designed so that the student can investigate questions of interest or pertinence in the space sciences. The course covers the basic topics from any good astrophysics course, but is designed around four central topics: The size and scale of the universe Energy and matter in the universe Evolution of the universe (beginning with the Big Bang) Observing our universe

Extractions: The top image shows a jet from a young star, while the bottom image shows a jet from an active galaxy. While there are underlying similarities in the physics of these objects, their scales are very different. The Herbig Haro 1 and 2 bipolar outflow (top), with a length of around a lightyear from tip to tip, originates on a star having an age of around a million years and a mass comparable to that of the Sun. Leeds has major research programmes in star formation, the discs around stars, and how outflows from stars and other astronomical sources affect the surrounding environments. The double radio lobes of Cygnus A (bottom) which span over 500,000 lightyears, are fed by jets of energetic particles formed near a 2.5 billion solar mass black hole. Similar jets are amongst the sources of very high energy gamma rays observed by the group and may be sites for the acceleration of the most energetic cosmic rays. The group plays a leading role in the Auger Observatory built to detect the sources of such cosmic rays. Image credits

Observing Time On Spitzer Space Telescope The Astrophysics Group in the School of Physical and Geographical Sciences have been awarded observing time on the Spitzer Space Telescope, one of NASA's "Great Observatories". Dr. Jacco van Loon, leading a team of astronomers from the University of Minnesota and Harvard, is awarded 18.4 hours of observing time to create an atlas at infrared wavelengths of the most massive globular cluster in our Galaxy, omega Centauri. Professor Nye Evans, leading an international team of European and American astronomers, is awarded 5.6 hours of observing time to study the dust formed in historical novae.
