Posture and Body Positioning The Handshake Kevin Andrew Over the many centuries of human existence, many social customs have emerged out of both necessity and leisure. The handshake is one custom that encompasses both of those origins. The handshake may appear little more than a formality to some, but to others it is a complete view into the personality of the person on the other end of the handshake. The handshake has also created nations and bought homesteads. However, in all cases it still requires two people to be executed correctly, thus causing an interaction to take place, which gives me the right, as a student of sociology, to investigate the handshake from a sociological perspective. The actual beginning of the handshake is as difficult to specifically determine as most events that happened before written history. However, there are many accounts that provide both comedy and insight. One origin offered by Herbert Spencer, in his book THE PRINCIPLES OF SOCIOLOGY, is that of two Arabs meting in a desert. They each reach for the others hand to kiss it in greeting. However, it is an insult to have your hand kissed by another individual, so both men try to withdraw from the lips of the other man. The end result of this meeting is the acceptance by both men that they wouldnt kiss the others hand, and thus they ended up only clasping the hand of the other, and the handshake was born. The mutual acceptance by the two men that the hands wouldnt be kissed shows the equality between the two individuals; however, that aspect will be discussed a little further down the page.

Jennings began his career, after graduating from high school in his home town of Tonica, Illinois, as a teacher in typical one-room country schools. His interests were at first mainly in the humanities, and these interests prevailed even after a year (1889) as Assistant Professor of Botany and Horticulture in the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical college, a position to which he was called by a former teacher. Not until he came under Reighard's influence at Michigan during his undergraduate years (1890-93) did he finally decide upon a career in Biology. Returning to America, he rapidly rose to eminence. After two years in temporary posts, he went to michigan (Instructor, 1899-1901; Assistant Professor, 1901-03) where he continued his study of behavior, directed the Survey of the Great Lakes, and was coauthor with reighard of the well-known "Anatomy of the Cat." When the first edition of "American Men of Science^ appeared, he was among the starred Zoologists. In 1903 he went to the university or pennsylvania and three years later brooks brought him to johns hopkins. He succeeded brooks in 1910 as henry walters professor or zoology and Director of the Zoological Laboratory, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1938. He then migrated to Los Angeles as Visiting Professor and Research Associate at the university or california where he remained until his death.

In the late 1800s, many Americans enthusiastically embraced Spencer's "Social Darwinism" to justify laissez-faire, or unrestricted, capitalism. Extractions: Part I The Unknowable Chapter 1 Religion and Science §2. Early traditions represent rulers as gods or demigods. By their subjects, primitive kings were regarded as superhuman in origin and superhuman in power. They possessed divine titles, received obeisances like those made before the altars of deities, and were in some cases actually worshipped. Of course along with the implied beliefs there existed a belief in the unlimited power of the ruler over his subjects, extending even to the taking of their lives at will; as until recently in Fiji, where a victim stood unbound to be killed at the word of his chief himself declaring, "whatever the king says must be done." In other times and among other races, we find these beliefs a little modified. The monarch, instead of being thought god or demigod, is conceived to be a man having divine authority, with perhaps more or less of divine nature. He retains, however, titles expressing his heavenly descent or relationships, and is still saluted in forms and words as humble as those addressed to the Deity. While in some places the lives and properties of his people, if not so completely at his mercy, are still in theory supposed to be his. Later in the progress of civilization, as during the middle ages in Europe, the current opinions respecting the relationship of rulers and ruled are further changed. For the theory of divine origin there is substituted that of divine right. No longer god or demigod, or even god-descended, the king is now regarded simply as God's vicegerent. The obeisances made to him are not so extreme in their humility; and his sacred titles lose much of their meaning. Moreover his authority ceases to be unlimited. Subjects deny his right to dispose at will of their lives and properties, and yield allegiance only in the shape of obedience to his commands.
