Picard shows one representation of the expressions. It's a shifting web of color-coded graphs, indecipherable at first but clearly not chaotic, and obviously capable of subtle gradations of meaning. But in the final product, these have been boiled down to three states: red, green and yellow. It seems like too much reduction. After all, if humans can learn to understand the compexities of a face at a glance, why not the connotations of a graph's outlines and color? It might take a little time to learn, but it seems possible. She then shows a video of children with autism using handheld, videocam-equipped computers loaded with the software a prototype of a system that could someday allow them to understand physical cues which now make no sense, and perhaps recommend an appropriate behavior.

Brief Exposition of Searle's Argument Searle imagines himself shut up in a room with two or three batches of papers full of writing in the Chinese language. His understanding of Chinese is absolutely zero, as would be a computer's understanding of a problem that it is asked to deal with. Here the goal is to exploit active site architecture to create molecules which will be bound by the targeted enzymes in place of NAD. Synthesized inhibitors are simultaneously being used as tools to obtain insights into enzyme mechanism and as agents potentially leading to medicinally important therapeutic activity. Antibacterial and antifungal activities as well as antiviral and anticancer activities are either precedented or predicted to result from inhibition of the targeted enzymes.
