Starting as a filing clerk, she became an office head in wardrobe department. Rand wrote screenplays for Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. One of her scenarios, 'The Skyscraper', based on a story by Dudley Murphy, told about an architect, named Howard Kane, who breaks through all obstacles on his mission to build a skyscraper.

She moved from Chicago, where she was living with relatives, to Hollywood shortly after her arrival in the states. In 1931 she received citizenship. During this time she worked on a number of unsuccessful plays, while she was employed as a wardrobe girl at one of the major movie studios. Some of her early works include We The Living(1936) and Anthem(1938). These two novels describe the evils of totalitarianism, as she experienced it in Russia. Deeply seated in the phiolosophy of Aristotle, she used his rationality to defend individuals and their rights. Moving towards the theme of egoistic genius, she produced The Fountainhead(1943), and in Atlas Shrugged(1957) she produced a fully developed philosophy of individualism. She defined Objectivism as "the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." Atlas was the end of Rand's fiction writing. From this point on she devoted all her time to defense of her objectivism.

Rand first made her name as a novelist, publishing We the Living in 1936, The Fountainhead in 1943, and her magnum opus Atlas Shrugged in 1957. These philosophical novels embodied themes she then developed in non-fiction form in a series of essays and books written in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905, Rand was raised in a middle-class family. As a child, she loved story-telling, and she decided at age nine to become a writer. In school showed academic promise, particularly in mathematics. Her family was devastated by the communist revolution of 1917, both by the social upheavals that the revolution and the ensuing civil war brought and by her father's pharmacy's being confiscated by the Soviets. The family moved to the Crimea to recover financially and to escape the harshness of life the revolution brought to St. Petersburg. They later returned to Petrograd (the new name given to St. Petersburg by the Soviets), where Rand was to attend university. At the University of Petrograd, Rand concentrated her studies on history, with secondary focuses on philosophy and literature. At university, she was repelled by the dominance of communist ideas and strong-arm tactics that suppressed free inquiry and discussion. As a youth, she had been repelled by the communists' political program, and now an adult, she was also more fully aware of the destructive effects that the revolution had had on Russian society more broadly.

To use his mind, to perceive reality and to act accordingly, is man's moral imperative. The standard of value of the Objectivist ethics is: man's life man's survival qua man or that which the nature of a rational being requires for his proper survival. The Objectivist ethics, in essence, hold that man exists for his own sake, that the pursuit of his own happiness is his highest moral purpose, that he must not sacrifice himself to others, nor sacrifice others to himself. It is this last that Galt's statement summarizes.

Her novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are still best selling introductions to the ideas of personal freedom and of the free market. As literature they may have drawbacks, but they are compelling "reads," which is certainly what Rand would have wanted. Rand's passionate and moralistic tone, while off-putting to many, is nevertheless probably a real part of her appeal and is no less than an equal and opposite reaction to the self-righteousness that is still characteristic of leftist rhetoric. Few writers convey an irresistible ferocity of convictions as Rand does. To many, including the present writer, raised and indoctrinated with the standard disparagements of capitalism, a novel like Atlas Shrugged can produce something very much like a Conversion Experience. At the same time, the harsh certainty of an autodidact and self-made person, and the high handed authoritarian manner of Rand's personality, worked against her case, her cause, and her life.

Rand hated life in Russia; she felt the dominant culture of Russia to glorify the tragic and the malevolent, the antithesis of what she wanted for her own life. And then there was the Bolshevik revolution. Not only did she witness the nationalization of her father's chemistry shop-a shop that represented the culmination of his self-made rise from poverty-but the morality of collectivism was abhorrent to Rand even as a young girl. Rand studied history at University of St. Petersburg. Although she knew she wanted to be a writer as early as age nine, she chose history because, on the one hand, she did not want to ``study, as examples, writers who bored [her] and whom [she] despised,'' and, on the other hand, history would give her the background she needed to write on the broad social issues with which she planned to deal. She graduated in 1924, only to work as a tour guide. In 1926 she left Russia for America, never to return.
