Extractions: ABSTRACT Our phenomenological heroes, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, to name a few, opened our approach by confronting "psychologism": the thinker in his thinking is "only the marionettes either of psychological mechanisms or of an external history" (Merleau-Ponty, 1964, p. 48). Mainstream psychology, however, seems not to have noticed this challenge to its reductionistic tendency. You know the story: Husserl, with a few ancestors and a lot of descendents, started the critique about the same time psychology began to devote itself to the assumptions and methods of the hard sciences (Giorgi, 1970). John Watson's famous "Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It" and Husserl's Ideas I were both published in 1913. It is unlikely that either found its way to the other's desk. This disconnect has mostly been maintained through the century. [For a review of that era of phenomenology see Herbert Spiegelberg's Phenomenology in Psychology and Psychiatry (1972).]

Extractions: Lois Shawver Levinas was born in 1906 in Lithuania, however, after going through the 1917 Russian revolution he traveled to France where he spent most of his life while traveling back and forth to Germany to pursue his studies with Husserl and Heidegger. Levinas died in 1995. He was made famous by Sartre who said that he had learned phenomenology by reading Levinas. Levinas was particularly struck by Heidegger's early phenomenology of Being and Time (that he summarized in his paraphrase Martin Heidegger and Ontology Levinas was profoundly influenced by Heidegger. Like Heidegger, he emphasized the importance of time for human understanding. He said that "time" is the profound relationship that humans have with God. It involves an understanding and appreciation of the limited time of our lives. Levinas had two major texts in which he outlined his own philosophy, Totality and Infinity (1961) and Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence (1974). Central to this work is his study of man's relation to the Other. Our relation to the Other is the foundation, he said, of our developing subjectivity. He explains that the ethical requirement that we are responsible to or for the Other unsettles subjectivity. So, whereas Heidegger thought of death in terms of "my death", for Levinas death is always the Other's death. And our consciousness is determined by the way in which we are haunted by the Other's death and the possibility of that death. Major Levinas texts:

He studied with the German philosophers Martin Heidegger and Edmund Husserl, and helped to introduce phenomenology into France in the 1930s, with his translation of Husserl's Cartesian Meditations (1931). In his major work, Existence and Existants Time and the Other (1947), and Otherwise Than Being or beyond Essence Levinas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, and as a young man studied Hebrew and the Bible, as well as Shakespeare and Russian literature. He emigrated to the Ukraine with his family during World War I, and in 1923 went to France to study philosophy at the University of Strasbourg. After continuing his studies at Freiburg University in Germany, he became a French citizen in 1930, and, at the outbreak of World War II, joined the French Army.
