Extractions: Creative Commons License In this paper, I want to promote Ibn Khaldun as a social theorist by lining out how and why Ibn Khaldun could be included into an early session of a social theory class. Instead of reading Hobbes and Comte under the title Two Legacies: Order and Positivism: Hobbes and Comte (as suggested in Tom Gieryn âs social theory graduate class at Indiana University in 1999) I would suggest reading and comparing Ibn Khaldun and Comte. The title of the session could be Circularity or Progress: Ibn Khaldun and Comte The central piece of Ibn Khaldunâs work is The Muqaddimah , which was completed in 1377. In this text he develops a theory of what he calls âilm al-umranâ, which could be translated as the study of social organization or civilization or as the science of human association/the science of culture Bringing Ibn Khaldun into the syllabus would reflect these contributions and acknowledge post-colonialist critiques at least to some extent. (b) I would see one of the goals of a graduate class on sociological theory in presenting to the students a view on the field of sociology that shows them how sociological theory is rooted in its contemporary culture. Ibn Khaldun is an excellent example for this embeddedness as he embarks on the analysis of medieval North Africa. His texts are a vivid example, showing how a new perspective of oneâs own environment can be reconstructed through the use of sociological argumentation.

Extractions: By Michael Brett School of Oriental and African Studies, London I Over thirty years ago, in 1974, Ernest Gellner read a paper here in Tunis to a conference marking the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Neo-Destour. Entitled Cohesion and identity: the Maghreb from Ibn Khaldun to Emile Durkheim, Saints of the Atlas established his concern with social structure at the same time that it involved consideration of the role of religion in society. His findings on the structure of the society he had studied, and on the role of religion in it, reproduced those of Evans-Pritchard in his study of The Sanusi of Cyrenaica in 1950; he began by distinguishing between two types of religiosity in Islam, the one scriptural and egalitarian, the other saintly and hierarchical. The letters P and C which he assigned to these types indicated their equivalence to Protestantism and Catholicism in Western European Christianity, a comparison which provided the basis for reflection on the contrast between the societies in question, and contributed to an all-embracing distinction between two types of society, pre-modern agrarian and modern industrial. Source Abu Zaid ibn Mahommed ibn Mahommed ibn Khaldun (1332-1406 CE) was born in Tunis. He studied various branches of Arabic learning and held high positions in Tunis, Granada, Fez, and Cairo, where he became a judge of Muslim law in 1384 CE. At this time a ship containing Ibn Khaldun's wife, children, and all of his property was wrecked, with no survivors. These were volatile times and he was repeatedly removed from his position and subsequently reinstated. There were intrigues against him in both Tunis and Granada. Ibn Khaldun was thrown into prison at one time, at another he raised a large force in Tunis against the desert Arabs. In 1400 CE he was sent to Damascus with an expedition to oppose the Mongolian conqueror, Tamerlane. After the expedition failed, Tamerlane permitted Ibn Khaldun to return to Egypt, where he died. Ibn Khaldun wrote A Universal History , which deals primarily with the history of the Arabs of Spain and Africa. In his introduction, he puts forward his views on the science of history and the development of society. Extracts are given below. This great specialist of Egyptian history grew up as a Hanafi then chose the Shafi`i school in his twenties. His family originated in Ba`labakk in Lebanon. Al-Sakhawi says "I have read in his hand-writing that his works exceeded 200 large volumes and that his teachers numbered 600" but he dismisses al-Maqrizi's claim of having heard from Ibn Kathir the "pattern-chained hadith of firstness" as "hardly true." Al-Maqrizi's greatness lies in his writing of geographical history, "particularly that of Egypt" (Ibn Hajar).
