It is certain that the easy and obvious philosophy will always, with the generality of mankind, have the preference above the accurate and abstruse; and by many will be recommended, not only as more agreeable, but more useful than the other. It enters more into common life; moulds the heart and affections; and, by touching those principles which actuate men, reforms their conduct, and brings them nearer to that model of perfection which it describes. On the contrary, the abstruse philosophy, being founded on a turn of mind, which cannot enter into business and action, vanishes when the philosopher leaves the shade, and comes into open day; nor can its principles easily retain any influence over our conduct and behaviour. The feelings of our heart, the agitation of our passions, the vehemence of our affections, dissipate all its conclusions, and reduce the profound philosopher to a mere plebeian.

Part I. real presence , which is as concise, and elegant, and strong as any argument can possibly be supposed against a doctrine, so little worthy of a serious refutation. It is acknowledged on all hands, says that learned prelate, that the authority, either of the scripture or of tradition, is founded merely in the testimony of the apostles, who were eye-witnesses to those miracles of our Saviour, by which he proved his divine mission. Our evidence, then, for the truth of the Christian religion is less than the evidence for the truth of our senses; because, even in the first authors of our religion, it was no greater; and it is evident it must diminish in passing from them to their disciples; nor can any one rest such confidence in their testimony, as in the immediate object of his senses. But a weaker evidence can never destroy a stronger; and therefore, were the doctrine of the real presence ever so clearly revealed in scripture, it were directly contrary to the rules of just reasoning to give our assent to it. It contradicts sense, though both the scripture and tradition, on which it is supposed to be built, carry not such evidence with them as sense; when they are considered merely as external evidences, and are not brought home to every one's breast, by the immediate operation of the Holy Spirit. silence the most arrogant bigotry and superstition, and free us from their impertinent solicitations. I flatter myself, that I have discovered an argument of a like nature, which, if just, will, with the wise and learned, be an everlasting check to all kinds of superstitious delusion, and consequently, will be useful as long as the world endures. For so long, I presume, will the accounts of miracles and prodigies be found in all history, sacred and profane.

Extractions: David Hume, portrait by Allan Ramsay ("the Younger"), 1754 This collection includes both early editions of works by the Scottish philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), and extensive holdings of scholarship about his life and thought. The items below have been chosen to indicate the range of older material in the Oliver Collection, but represent only a small portion of its total holdings. Individual titles are cataloged in the library's on-line catalogue USCAN. The collection was formed by Prof. James Willard Oliver (1912-2001). Prof. Oliver (Ph.D. Harvard 1949) taught at the University of Florida and at the University of Southern California before moving to the University of South Carolina in 1964, as Professor and first Head of the new Department of Philosophy. Through Professor Oliver's generosity, his Hume collection was transferred to the University in 1997. In the following years, Prof. Oliver also transferred his substantial collections of works by and about Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and of modern American logic, notably the logic of of W. V. Quine (1908-2000), with whom Prof. Oliver had worked at Harvard.

Extractions: David Hume was a Scottish philosopher who is responsible for much of the modern development of skepticism and empiricism. According to Hume, we only very rarely have rational justifications for the things we believe to be matters of fact. There is simply no way for us to actually examine the external world - all we have is our own psychology and our reactions to what we experience. Instead, much of what we claim as knowledge can actually be traced back to custom or habit, not empirical demonstration. He did not just apply this to statements about objects, but also to reality itself, concluding that our statements about our selves, our shared world, and our reality itself can be based on very little that is rationally justified. As a result, he argued that an extreme form of skepticism is the only possibly justified position to take. Hume's skeptical critique of knowledge was also applied to both religion and morality. According to Hume, our moral principles are not actually based upon any objective, moral facts but are instead driven by human emotions, desires and passions. We cannot justify any particular ethical claims by relying upon statements of objective fact and must rather argue from human needs. In this way, he created the first systematic treatment of values and ethics in modern philosophy which was completely secular and centered on humans, rather than on something divine. Thus, he wrote:

Hume rejects the 'social contract' account of the origins of government. The authority of government rests on a general sense of its usefulness; its authority lasts while it remains useful. After Locke an important change occurred in the climate of opinion in Europe. Locke wrote a book called The Reasonableness of Christianity (1695). During the eighteenth century many writers on ethical and political subjects openly rejected Christianity, as being unreasonable, and others reinterpreted it drastically, to make it reasonable. For a time a popular position was Deism (from the Latin word deus, God): the deists believed in God but not in the divine origin of the bible; they held that all we can know, and need to know, about God is knowable by natural reason, i.e., philosophically. Sometimes they claimed that deism was Christianity purged of the 'mysteries',which were later accretions (cf. Toland, Christianity not Mysterious ). Some deists rejected Christianity altogether, and advocated natural religion, i.e., religion based on natural reason alone.
