Although emotion and addiction involve visceral motivation, they are also closely linked to cognition and culture. They thus provide the ideal vehicle for Jon Elster''s study of the interrelation between three explanatory approaches to behavior: neurobiology, culture, and choice.

Extractions: Description of Objectives and Requirements: Neo-Institutionalism claims to be the most useful approach to explaining how rights, rules, laws, norms and conventions change. In this semester we will test this claim through a critique of the extensive, and growing, literature on property rights. We will begin with a discussion of the limitations on and advantages of rational choice explanations in general and of the contending explanations of institutional change in particular. We will then move on to look at the success or failure of scholars (political scientists, economists, anthropologists, sociologists and legal studies scholars) in explaining such basic social institutions as laws, norms, conventions, constitutions, government organizations and corporate rules. Many of these are directly related to the study of property rights. In the last half of the semester, we will focus on empirical research which attempts to explain changes in a set of institutions that are immensely influential and fundamental for all societies: property rights. In this section we will be asking whether or not such research is useful for us in evaluating contending explanations, and whether or not we can create a general theory for how property rights change. Members of the seminar will end the semester by sharing the results of their own empirical research on the nature of property rights.

Extractions: Course Outline This course is an introduction to the logic of inquiry in the social sciences. By logic of inquiry we refer to the way that social scientific theories are brought into relation with evidence (whatever that might be). We begin by reviewing key debates in the philosophy of science/social science. We then move on to examine problems of agency, casing, and temporality. In the last part of the course we discuss the fundamental concepts of measurement in social sciences, and introduce the basics of statistical and qualitative reasoning. Evaluation in the course is based on four pieces of work: a research paper proposal, class participation, reading summaries (reaction papers), and a course presentation. Basis of Evaluation: Presentation: 20% Class Participation: Students are expected to attend all classes and participate in discussion. This is not a secondary part of the class. You are to be prepared to comment in detail on the required readings, and possibly on one or two of the optional readings. Presentation: Students will choose one of the weeks to present the required readings. This presentation should be about 15 minutes along. (A good fifteen minute presentation is usually based on a written essay of about 4 to 5 single spaced pages). It should lay out the main issues in the readings, and evaluate the various approaches.
