Cassirer was a member of the Marburg School and studied the history of philosophical problems and thoughts. He believed that modern philosophy has to accept and reflect Einstein's theory of relativity overcoming Kant's philosophy as an answer to Newton's mechanical principles. Yale University Press, 1944 In 'An essay on man' Cassirer succinctly outlines the differences between science, mythology and religion, a problem important to all of us. For science literacy cannot be achieved, if we don't understand the limitations of the abstraction and objectification science introduces to man's culture. Science can restrict the subjective qualities of myth and religion, but it cannot destroy their reality, since every human experience has a claim to reality. Cassirer gives the following example. "In our scientific concepts we reduce the differences between two colors .. to a numeric difference [of wavelength]. But it is a very inadequate way of speaking if we declare number to be more real than color. What is really meant is that it is more general. ... But to hypothesize number ... as the ultimate reality, the very essence and substance of things, is a metaphysical fallacy." Science gives an order in thoughts, morality gives an order in action, and art gives an order in the apprehension of appearances. Natural laws are discovered, they do not create reality. The introduction of new classes of numbers does not create new objects but new symbols. Cassirer's text is a lucid exploration of the structures of man's cultural activities. His essay is a tribute to the fact that what ever man does, he converses with himself, rather than with nature, god, or the universe.

Extractions: University of Minnesota Published in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research This small volume is a translation of Sprache und Mythos , written some twenty-two years ago at a time when the late Professor Cassirer was in the midst of his labors on his monumental Philosophie der Symbolischen Formen . It is an off-shoot of the latter work, and together with his recent Essay on Man , provides the English reader with a first hand account, in relative non-technical terms, of Cassirer's approach to philosophy. The study opens with a critique of negativistic theories of myth, theories which explain the occurrence of myth in terms of error, and specifically that kind of error which is based on the deficiencies (e.g., ambiguity) of language. Misconceptions of this kind are traced by Cassirer to naive realism, the notion that nature confronts the mind "as something directly and unequivocally given" (p. 6). To obtain a correct understanding of the nature of myth, and indeed, of any phenomenon of the human spirit we must "accept in all seriousness what Kant calls his 'Copernican Revolution' " (p. 8). In Cassirer's argument, however, this Revolution is given a "nominalistic" twist. The forms which bind together the thinking which is the generation of world-for-mind, are no longer the fixed pure schematized categories of Kant, but are instead conceived of as essentially bound up with the symbolism that would ordinarily be said to express them, and, consequently, as sharing in the

I've only just started to read him, beginning with what was first to hand, namely the historical works, and frankly I'm puzzled. What, exactly, is a "symbolic form"? It seems to have some connection to Kant's ideas about the structures which we necessarily impose upon phenomena; but on the other hand Cassirer sometimes talks about them as though they evolved through time. Also, he speaks of "science" and "myth" as symbolic forms, though I don't think he would have said we have "scientific" or "mythic" perceptions. And did Cassirer believe in noumena? And, on the subject of myths , having read his Myth of the State, which he begins with a summary of his thoughts on what myths are and what they do, all I can tell you is that he thought they had something to do with emotions, could be about any subject at all, and had rituals as their "motor expressions." (Perhaps that was a bad exposition on his part; perhaps I'm just dense.) And just what principles did he employ in historical research? His
