Reprinted in the Supplement to Meaning and Necessity: A Study in Semantics and Modal Logic, enlarged edition (University of Chicago Press, 1956). Others object strongly to this procedure as violating the basic principles of empiricism and leading back to a metaphysical ontology of the Platonic kind. It is the purpose of this article to clarify this controversial issue. The nature and implications of the acceptance of a language referring to abstract entities will first be discussed in general; it will be shown that using such a language does not imply embracing a Platonic ontology but is perfectly compatible with empiricism and strictly scientific thinking. Then the special question of the role of abstract entities in semantics will be discussed. It is hoped that the clarification of the issue will be useful to those who would like to accept abstract entities in their work in mathematics, physics, semantics, or any other field; it may help them to overcome nominalistic scruples. 2. Extractions: CHAPTER VIII POSITIVISM, POST-POSITIVISM AND POSTMODERNISM EVALDAS NEKRASAS Fierce attacks on modernism by postmodernists reawakened an interest in positivist modernism both inside and outside academic circles. This interest is still alive in spite of the fact that some philosophers claim that today we are living already in a post-post-modern era. A fundamental question looms large: are postmodernists right when they claim that postmodern thinking is radically different from the modern one, of which positive (or positivist) thinking is a paradigmatic case? When examining this issue it is advisable to start from the brief analysis of the causes which led to disintegration of the latest form of positivism which, a bit paradoxically, was likely closest to the philosophy of the originator of the movement, namely that of David Hume. By this latest form I mean, of course, logical positivism. (Not everyone would agree that precisely Hume and not Auguste Comte was the originator of positivism but I do not intend to discuss this issue here.) Logical positivism as a distinct and integrated type of philosophy actually ceased to exist more or less three decades ago. According to the common wisdom it started to fell apart under criticism of W.V. Quine and Karl Popper. Their attacks on the fundamental principles of positivism were followed by later ones coming from different quarters and assailing positivism on different lines. There are other, earlier candidates for this divide through which significant topoi separated off into differing currents of philosophy Lanfredini describes the conflict between Husserl and Schlick over the significance of qualitative aspects for the constitution of knowledge. Schlick, pre-figuring the language of Carnap and Ayer, advocated the elimination of these aspects from the domain of rigorous, scientific knowledge. The acceptance of this criterion confronted them with the same problem: how to understand the Other as a subject with his own experience, if the existence and nature of the Other's experiences cannot be verified. Husserl tackled this problem in the Cartesian Meditations Dasein 's being-with includes "primitive" adaptive behavior such as cries, smiles, and threatening or playful gesture. As Dasein is acculturated, these behaviors are partially superseded by functionally equivalent linguistic expressions. I. Introduction There are obvious and important ways in which analytic and continental philosophy differ, but this should not make us overlook their thematic and historical similarities. Both traditions had their roots in phenomenalistic theories that attempted to reduce all meaning to the immediately given. Even though phenomenology was more generous in construing what was immediately given, neither phenomenology nor logical positivism could do justice to our understanding of the subjectivity of other people. Heidegger and Wittgenstein each dealt with this problem in unique but complementary ways.

Extractions: Nothing in the works of the Logical Positivists united them more than Rudolph Carnap's statement that "In the domain of metaphysics, including all philosophy of value and normative theory, logical analysis yields the negative results that the alleged statements in this domain are entirely meaningless." Such statements he meant are not just pointless or false, they are nothing but sequences of words that, however they may appear otherwise, do not make a statement at all. It is not completely honest to discuss this attitude of Carnap's with Aristotle in mind. The metaphysics that Carnap railed against, like Heidiggers, did not share that strong ground with nature that characterized the philosophies of both Aristotle and the Positivists. In order to avoid the problems of metaphysics Carnap turned to the problem of developing words and sentences with clear and concise meanings. Concerning the meaning of words, first, Carnap said, we need to determine the syntax of a word in the simplest sentence it is capable of occurring in. He called this an elementary sentence. For example the word stone. The simplest sentence might be "X is a stone." We can call this sentence S. Once this has been determined we must answer the question "What sentence is S deducible from and What sentences are deducible from S?" Once these sentences have been reduced to observation sentences or what are called protocol sentences, that is the meaning of the word. Thus the meaning of a word must be reducible to observation states which can be verified.
