This fierce spirit of liberty is stronger in the English colonies probably than in any other people of the earth; and this from a great variety of powerful causes; which, to understand the true temper of their minds, and the direction which this spirit takes, it will not be amiss to lay open somewhat more largely. By all accounts, however, he is the "modern founder of political conservatism," and generations of conservative thinkers have found his life and work a rich source of philosophical and practical wisdom. Burke, of course, was a statesman and not a political philosopher, and he never produced anything that may be regarded as a systematic political treatise. Nevertheless, he embraced a consistent political creed that governed his actions throughout his life. The thesis of this essay is that Burkes implicit political creed is, in all essential respects, the doctrine articulated by the twentieth-century social philosopher F. A. Hayek. Hayeks aim, he said, was to "restate" or systematize those basic principles whose observance generated and sustain Western constitutional government and the free society. The "classical liberal" principles articulated by Hayek were also those that inspired and guided Burke.

Although his mother, Mary Nagle, was a Catholic and his father, Richard - a solicitor - had converted to Anglicanism, Burke was educated from 1741 at Abraham Shackleton's Quaker boarding school in Ballitore, Co. Kildare. Edmund Burke was brought up as an Anglican in order that he would not be limited by the Williamite Penal Laws against Catholics. In 1744 Burke successfully sat the entrance examinations for Trinity College, Dublin. He took his final examinations in 1748 and in 1750 he embarked on his legal training at the Middle Temple in London but appears to have lost interest in the Law as a career. He left England and spent some time wandering around England and France. He then took up a career in writing. For more on Edmund Burke click here Social scientists increasingly recognise that Burke's little platoons are more than a defence against revolution, they are the glue that holds society together and makes it tolerable. However pessimists fear that they are breaking down. They worry that the market, the nuclear family, increasing self-centredness, or whatever, are all destroying civil society. iGreens are more optimistic. We believe that the modern welfare state, which takes on the jobs that would have fallen to the little platoons, is the biggest danger to civil society. Unfortunately for the recipients of state welfare it does the jobs less well. It replaces private and charitable institutions with politically correct social workers, an education system that can't or won't teach the three R's, and a crumbling monolithic NHS run largely for the convenience of its own staff.

He received his early ed. at a Quaker school at Ballitore, and in 1743 proceeded to Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1748. His father wished him to study for the law, and with this object he, in 1750, went to London and entered the Middle Temple. He, however, disliked law and spent more time in literary pursuits than in legal study. In 1756 his first published work appeared, A Vindication of Natural Society On the Sublime and Beautiful , which attracted universal attention, and three years later (1759) he projected with Dodsley the publisher The Annual Register , for which he continued to write the yearly Survey of Events until 1788. About the same time he was introduced to W.G. Hamilton (known as Single-speech H.) then about to go to Ireland as Chief Sec., and accompanied him in the capacity of private secretary, in which he remained for three years. Its membership is drawn largely from the Law School with significant participation by students from other parts of the University. The Society serves as a place where conservatives (and others) can gather and discuss ideas seriously in an amiable atmosphere. The primary activity of the Edmund Burke Society is debate. Each quarter, four debate caucuses are held, typically on Wednesday evenings. The topics debated by the Society vary in nature ranging from the timeless to the topical to the humorous. In the last year, for example, the Society has debated: "Resolved: The Enlightenment Poisoned Western Civilization"; "Resolved: Cut the Safety Net"; and "Resolved: Suburbia is Subversive." The debates follow an informal structure which allows for lively discussion. Speeches generally combine persuasive reasoning with wit and oratorical flourish.
