He was well-read, well-traveled, and influenced by Kierkegaard and the existentialist thought of his time. Buber had to go back to seek the roots with which Heschel already leaves Poland, himself coming to Berlin to become a "modern man": "When I left my home in Poland, I became a modern Western man." And Buber cannot deny his roots in modern thought. In his writings - he preferred not to think of them as a theory - he combines terms such as revelation, divine spark, and mystic with terms such as freedom, choice, authenticity, and alienation. His marriage of traditional Jewish values with modern thought could only be possible because for Buber, religiosity meant "Erneuerung" , re-newal, re-creation, re-invention, or the existentialist 'turning'. In recreating and overcoming what was, Buber was very much a man of his time. Bubers anthropology But Buber's anthropology makes no claims to be in coherence with any ideological system - except maybe Judaism in so far as it is understood as the idea of man relating to the "Unbedingte", the 'unconditioned' or 'absolute'. Buber's image of man is, as we will see, descriptive and prescriptive all at the same time. His interpretations of the past transform into normative-ontological claims about the future. Is he more rooted in the Western existentialist mood of his time, or more anchored in the Jewish tradition? For matters of inner coherence, which perspective on his vocabulary would be most illuminating? For foundationalists, those who seek to firmly root one system of thought in one tradition or the other, this is hard to say. Buber's vocabulary, both modern and traditional, is a genuine and comprehensive one.

In 1902, Buber became the editor of the weekly Die Welt , the central organ of the Zionist movement. From 1903 he became occupied with the Jewish Hasidic movement. In 1904, Buber withdrew from much of his Zionist organizational work and devoted himself to study and writing. In 1908 Buber published Die Legende des Baalschem (stories of the Baal Shem Tov), the founder of Hasidism. From 1910 to 1914, Buber studied myths and published editions of mythic texts. The grandson of the noted Talmud and Midrash scholar, Solomon Buber, Martin Buber was deeply stirred by the religious message of Hasidism and considered it his duty to convey that message to the world. He wrote several books on Hasidism including collections of Hasidic tales. He was very concerned about Jewish education in Germany and, together with Franz Rosenzweig he translated the Bible into German. During the early Nazi period (193338) Buber traveled throughout Germany lecturing, teaching and encouraging his fellow Jews, and thus organized something of a spiritual resistance to the oppressions which were beginning. In 1938 he settled in Palestine and was appointed professor of social philosophy at the Hebrew University, where he taught until his retirement in 1951.

He was active in Jewish student organizations in Prague, and it was during this period that he came to know Martin Buber, who often made addresses at the invitation of the student organization, Bar Kochba, to which Kohn belonged. During World War I, he was captured as a prisoner of war and held in Russia for five years, including a year in Siberia. For the next ten years, he lived in France, England and Palestine. He was a professor at Smith College in Northampton for fifteen years, and at City College in New York for over ten years. At the time of this seminar, he held a position at the Center for Advanced Studies at Wesleyan. The author of numerous books and publications, including one of the first Buber biographies, he wrote extensively on the topics of nationalism, pan-Slavism, German thought, and the Jewish religion. He died in 1971.
