Meanwhile, Leverrier sent his figures to Galle at the Berlin Observatory, and Galle, having better maps, was able to find the planet within a few hours. Historians think Roger Bacon was born in 1213 in Ilchestershire. They don't have an exact date because records were not kept very well back then. His parents were well-off land owners. One thing historians think about his father is that he had a high regard for education, because two of his sons became teachers. When Bacon was 13 years old, he entered Oxford University. While he was at Oxford, he studied optics, geometry, arithmetic, music, and astronomy. He graduated with a Masters Degree from Oxford and then taught there until around 1241. Bacon went off and studied on his own for a while as a scientist and could only be reached by letters or messengers. While Bacon was studying, he made one of his most important mathematical contributions, which was the application of geometry to optics. He also calculated the maximum altitude of the rainbow to be 42Q. When Bacon left studying on his own and started studying with other scientists, they discussed the possibilities of early automobiles, airplanes, and submarines. He also collaborated with them to create an encyclopedia to show Pope Clement IV that science was important to the church. Before the encyclopedia could reach the Pope, the Pope died.
