He wrote, or inspired the writing of, a Rule outlining the basic principles of this sort of life. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. Augustine became a teacher. He first taught Grammar in Tagaste. He then taught Rhetoric in Carthage, and later in Rome and Milan.

Diocesan architect Munro Cautley observed the letter of Suffolk Perpendicular rather than the spirit. Consequently, the church looks rather dumpy in its concrete rendering. Grander than his St Andrew , it has none of the spirit of its age that you find at contemporary near neighbour All Hallows Mock-Perpendicular rises above mock-Tudor on the Bucklesham Road. Still, this is a landmark building, and it is light and airy inside. It contains the bell from the now-vanished church of St Peter, Linstead Magna , which was derelicted the year before St Augustine was built. Supposedly, the font is from there, too. But it seems possible that the Linstead Magna font was moved to St Margaret, Linstead Parva , and St Augustine inherited the old font from Linstead Parva. A bit like one of those party games. Cautley takes himself rather seriously in south-east Ipswich.

Born in Tagaste, in Numidia, Augustines journey to faith was far from straightforward. Converting to Christianity in 386, Augustine had immersed himself first in Manichaeism, then in scepticism, and then in Neo-Platonism. Once a Christian, Augustine became Bishop of Hippo, and a powerful theologian and defender of the faith. Augustines theological career was marked by two campaigns against heresies in particular; first, against the Manichaeism to which he had previously adhered, and second, against Pelagianism. Manichaeism was a dualist philosophy, according to which there are two transcendent forces responsible for the world, one good and one evil. Its main attraction is that it can more readily explain the mixture of good and evil in the world around us than can the view that we are governed by a single omnipotent and benevolent God. To combat this Persian religion, Augustine affirmed the inherent goodness of Gods Creation. Evil, Augustine argued, does not exist in its own right, but is merely the privation of good, and therefore is not something that was created. All that was created, then is good, so the view that there is a single, good Creator is consistent with the way that the world is.

Extractions: The earlier sandstone church to the south of the present church was designed by A.W.N. Pugin in Early English Gothic style and built in 1848-51 with extensions in 1860; it is now used as the hall. The present church was opened in 1907. It was built in brick with cement dressings in an Arts and Crafts idiom to the design of E.A. Bates. It is prominently sited with a lofty square tower and distinctive bellcast roof, visible across the harbour. The spacious church interior includes a nave and lofty aisles and provides a superb acoustical environment for the magnificent Hill organ located in the high west gallery. Following a period of neglect, during which the pipework for the Great Wald Flute 4, Fifteenth 2 and the Choir Clarionet 8 disappeared, a restoration under the consultancy of David Kinsela was carried out in 1966. At this time, tuning slides were fitted to the metal fluework and the missing Great ranks were replaced by a Block Flute 2 and Fifteenth 2. The work also included the removal of the 1966 Block Flute 2 in order to restore a Wald Flute 4 to the organ and the non-original reed on the Choir was replaced by a Clarionet.
