Extractions: VIRUSES that are non- or poorly cytopathic have developed various strategies to avoid elimination by the immune system and to persist in the host . Acute infection of adult mice with the noncytopathic lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) normally induces a protective cytotoxic T-cell response that also causes immunopathology . But some LCMV strains (such as DOCILE (LCMV-D) or Cl-13 Armstrong (Cl-13) ) derived from virus carrier mice tend to persist after acute infection of adult mice without causing lethal immunopathological disease . Tendency to persist correlates with tropism , rapidity of virus spread and virus mutations . We report here that these LCMV isolates may persist because they induce most of the specific antiviral CD8 cytotoxic T cells so completely that they all disappear within a few days and therefore neither eliminate the virus nor cause lethal immunopathology. The results illustrate that partially and sequen-tially induced (protective) immunity or complete exhaustion of T-cell immunity (high zone tolerance) are quantitatively different points on the scale of immunity; some viruses exploit the latter possibility to persist in an immunocompetent host.

They discovered, on the basis of their work done at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (Australian National University, Canberra), how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells. This laid the foundation for an understanding of the mechanisms used by the cell immune system to recognise foreign micro-organisms as also its own molecules. K. GAJENDRAN The discovery revolutionised clinical medicine as it helped strengthen the immune response against invading organisms and cancers, apart from diminishing the effects of auto-immune reactions in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatic situations, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. This opened up a whole new area of research in vaccine development. A specialist in immunology, Zinkernagel (57) is Professor at the Institute of Experimental Immunology, Department of Pathology, University of Zurich, Switzerland. Since 1981, his work has won him at least one award every year from reputed international institutions.

And his numerous contributions over the span of more than 40 years have continued to advance the field. One measure of his place in medical history is the vast number of surgeons and scientists who trained under his tutelage and still more whose daily practice continues to be influenced by his work and vision. Many of these former students and colleagues a who's who in the transplant world from six continents will pay tribute to Dr. Starzl at a Festschrift in his honor April 27-28 at the University of Pittsburgh. More than 300 are expected to attend the Festschrift, which in academic circles can be both a celebration and subsequent publication of selected scholarly writings in honor of an esteemed scholar late in his or her career. This event also serves as a belated celebration of Dr. Starzls 75th birthday, which was March 11. The first day consists of a program of some 27 oral and 50 poster scientific presentations of novel work or very recent findings, many in areas of study of keen interest to Dr. Starzl. The following morning Dr. Starzl's portrait will be unveiled in the School of Medicine's main lecture room, where it will hang among the 28 portraits of the school's former deans and most distinguished faculty, including polio vaccine discoverer Jonas Salk, M.D.

Dyer lecture on Wednesday, Apr. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Clinical Center's Masur Auditorium. His talk, titled "Antiviral Immunity and Vaccines," will explore a wide range of immunological topics, including why vaccines against persistent infections such as HIV or tuberculosis have been difficult to achieve, while vaccines that maintain or induce high levels of neutralizing antibodies have been much more effective at preventing disease. A native of Basel, Zinkernagel was awarded an M.D. from the University of Basel in 1968. Deciding not to pursue a career as a surgeon, he undertook postgraduate education in experimental medicine at the University of Zurich and in immunology at the University of Lausanne. In 1973, he began a second postdoctoral course in immunology at the Australian National University, Canberra. Between 1973 and 1975, Zinkernagel and Dr. Peter C. Doherty collaborated in work that led to the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which the two shared.
