Extractions: How to Tackle Organic Syntheses - A Beginner's Guide by Prof Otto Meth-Cohn The Wittig Reaction Georg Wittig well deserved his Nobel Prize in 1979 - and is a hero of mine because he was a doddering 56 years old when he discovered this very versatile reaction. The idea is very simple - as are all good ideas. Phosphorus is a second row element - in Group 5 - like nitrogen - but unlike nitrogen can expand its valency from 3 to 4, 5, or even 6. The stable 5 valency is met in compounds like phosphoric acid and PCl . What Wittig discovered was that phosphines (the P equivalent of amines) easily form phosphonium salts with alkyl halides and that these salts readily lose HX with a strong base. The product is called an ylide or a phosphorane . The ylide is a very polar molecule with a carbanionic carbon (aren't carbanions useful?!). How to make a phosphorus ylide This ylide reacts enthusiastically with an aldehyde or ketone to give an alkene. How to make an alkene using the Wittig reaction You'll notice that the reaction involves formation of a 4-membered ring intermediate and that the very stable phosphine oxide is a by-product. The great thing for hard-pressed student synthesizers is that the alkene is made up by linking an aldehyde or ketone to an alkyl halide replacing the O and the halide by a double bond. Just snip the alkene at the double bond and make one half an aldehyde or ketone and the other half an alkyl halide.

Extractions: (b. June 16, 1897, Berlin, Ger.d. Aug. 26, 1987, Heidelberg, W.Ger.), German chemist whose studies of organic phosphorus compounds won him a share (with Herbert C. Brown ) of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1979. In investigating reactions involving carbanions, negatively charged organic species, Wittig discovered a class of organic phosphorus compounds called ylides that mediate a particular type of reaction that became known as the Wittig reaction. This reaction proved of great value in the synthesis of complex organic compounds such as vitamins A and D , prostaglandins, and steroids.

Extractions: In the Wittig reaction, which he first demonstrated 1954, a carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone) reacts with an organic phosphorus compound, an alkylidenetriphenylphosphorane, (C6H5)3P=CR2, where R is a hydrogen atom or an organic radical. The alkylidene group (=CR2) of the reagent reacts with the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group to form a hydrocarbon with a double bond, an olefin (alkene). In general:

Through the synthesis of the pentaaryl derivatives of the elements of group 5, the phosphorous ylides were discovered and also, in 1953, the carbonylolefins which have since proven to be crucial for the manufacture of synthetic fabrics and also important in other industrial processes. In 1942 dehydrobenzol was proven to be a shortlived by-product, a fact demonstrated bye. D. Roberts in 1953 and by me, only this time using different means, viz. control experiments on Diels - Alder adducts. More recently the concept of the "at"-complexes as a counterpart to the "onium" complexes has led to the development of a new chemistry from which have come the sodium tetra phenylborates.
