Wilson was an undergraduate at Harvard College, and obtained his doctorate in 1961 at the California Institute of Technology , where he was a student of Murray Gell-Mann. He was then a Junior Fellow in Harvard's Society of Fellows, and joined Cornell University 's Department of Physics in 1963. He held a professorship there beginning in 1970, and the James A. Weeks Chair in Physical Sciences since 1974. Wilson became the Director of the Center for Theory and Simulation in Science and Engineering ( Cornell Theory Center ) - one of five national supercomputer centers created by the National Science Foundation - in 1985. My grandfather on my mother's side was a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; my other grandfather was a lawyer, and one time Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives. My schooling took place in Wellesley, Woods Hole, Massachusetts (second, third/fourth grades in two years), Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Mass. (from fifth to eighth grade), ninth grade at the Magdalen College School in Oxford, England, and tenth and twelfth grades (skipping the eleventh) at the George School in eastern Pennsylvania. Before the year in England I had read about mathematics and physics in books supplied by my father and his friends. I learned the basic principle of calculus from Mathematics and Imagination by Kasner and Newman, and went of to work through a calculus text, until I got stuck in a chapter on involutes and evolutes. Around this time I decided to become a physicist. Later (before entering college) I remember working on symbolic logic with my father; he also tried, unsuccessfully, to teach me group theory. I found high school dull. In 1952 I entered Harvard. I majored in mathematics, but studied physics (both by intent), participated in the Putnam Mathematics competition, and ran the mile for the track team (and crosscountry as well). I began research, working summers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, especially for Arnold Arons (then based at Amherst).

Extractions: Heritage Farm was the home of Ruth and Harold Frazier for sixty years. In July of 1993, I visited the farm to interview Mr. and Mrs. Frazier about our mutual family history. Both of the Fraziers were in their eighties and dealing with age related health problems. The following story is a compilation of family history which I have learned as a direct result of that interview. I remember Ruth and Harold Frazier as two of my teachers while I was growing up in McKinney, Texas. The first time I remember meeting Ruth Frazier was in the fall of 1965 in her th grade history class at L. A. Scott Junior High, on the campus of what had earlier been Boyd High School and what was later to become and continues to be Caldwell Elementary School. One of my fondest memories of Mrs. Frazier revolves around a time when she called me back into her room after history class. After discussing what I am sure was very important problem, long since forgotten by both of us, she informed me, "I know your mother and your father!" I quipped back, "I bet you don't know my grandparents!"

I came to Cornell in response to an unsolicited offer I received while at CERN; I accepted the offer because Cornell was a good university, was out in the country and was reputed to have a good folk dancing group, folk-dancing being a hobby I had taken up as a graduate student. I have remained at Cornell ever since, except for leaves and summer visits: I spent the 1969 - 1970 academic year at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, the spring of 1972 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the fall of 1976 at the California Institute of Technology as a Fairchild Scholar, and the academic year 1979 - 80 at the IBM Zürich Laboratory.

Extractions: Plant molecular biology; plant mitochondria; the mechanisms regulating intron mobility and evolution Our mission is to understand the molecular evolution of genes and introns within the mitochondria of higher plants, in order to advance the fields of plant genetics, biosystematics, and biochemistry. Within the area of plant genetics we are interested in motility of group II introns and the mechanism underlying these events. We are interested in structural rearrangements of the mtDNA due to events such as transposition and crossing over. We are interested in other events that modify the flow of information from the gene to the protein including splicing and editing. Since studies on mitochondria are limited because genetic mutants are not available, we are interested in mechanisms of altering the function of mitochondrial genes such as mutation or genetic engineering. The production of genetic mutants for investigation is important in the overall understanding of mitochondria. Within the area of plant systematics we are interested in the phylogenetic distribution of mitochondrial introns and their structural variants. We are also interested in the evolution of portions of the introns.
