Rider University Newswire Story Rider University will confer honorary doctor of laws degrees on Dr. eric F.wieschaus, a Nobel laureate in physiology and medicine, and Graeme Phelps Flip http://www.rider.edu/news/newswire/spring2003/honorarydegree.htm
Extractions: Dr. Wieschaus, professor of molecular biology at Princeton University, won the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine in 1995. A member of the faculty since 1981, he is recognized for his scientific scholarship. That recognition has taken the form of both his election to the National Academies of Sciences and his winning the Nobel Prize. Wieschaus received his Ph.D. in biology from Yale University and conducted post-doctoral work with the University of Zurich, Switzerland. In 1974, he won the John Spangler Niclaus Prize for the outstanding dissertation in experimental embryology. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame.

Extractions: President of the United States We the undersigned urge you to support Federal funding for research using human pluripotent stem cells. We join with other research institutions and patient groups in our belief that the current National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines, which enable scientists to conduct stem cell research within the rigorous constraints of federal oversight and standards, should be permitted to remain in effect. The discovery of human pluripotent stem cells is a significant milestone in medical research. Federal support for the enormous creativity of the US biomedical community is essential to translate this discovery into novel therapies for a range of serious and currently intractable diseases. The therapeutic potential of pluripotent stem-cells is remarkably broad. The cells have the unique potential to differentiate into any human cell type. Insulin-producing cells could be used to treat - or perhaps even cure - patients with diabetes, cardiomyocytes could be used to replace damaged heart tissue, chondrocytes could be used for arthritis, and neurons for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS and spinal cord injuries to name a few examples. There is also the possibility that these cells could be used to create more complex, vital organs, such as kidneys, livers, or even entire hearts.

Extractions: EDITOR'S NOTE: One hundred fifty Nobel Laureates will gather in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, on Dec. 7 for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize. The prize winners in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics meet in Stockholm, where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the peace prize winners meet in Oslo. The more than 100 signatories to the attached statement have their own individual priorities in viewing the future, but all agree to this broad outline of the challenge facing humankind. Among scientists signing are Dr. Francis Crick (Physiology/Medicine, 1962), co-discoverer of the double-helix; Dr. Hans Bethe (Physics, 1967), discoverer of the source of the sun's energy; Dr. Charles Townes (Physics, 1964), co-discoverer of the laser, and Drs. Mario Molina (Chemistry, 1995) and Paul Crutzen (Chemistry, 1995), honored for their studies of the chemistry of the atmosphere and the ozone hole.

Extractions: On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001 The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.

Extractions: November 12, 1998 By Linda Sage People who suffer from depression have fewer cells in a certain part of the brain, a new study finds. This loss occurs only when the disorder runs in the family, suggesting that inherited depression may differ from other types of depression. "One of the things we hope may result from our findings is the recognition that there are important differences between patients with a familial history of depression and those without," said Joseph L. Price, Ph.D., who headed the research. "There might also be differences in appropriate drug therapies." Price is a professor of anatomy and neurobiology at the School of Medicine. Extractions: Frankly, many men and women feeling proud of their nice bodies as well and one of the most attractive feelings between lovers or partners is based on touching each other's bodies. However have you ever thought of why the bodies of all normal human beings are organized in the same pattern, for instance, with the head always growing on the shoulders, with two legs supporting the body and the eyes always on the front of the head but not on the back.
Extractions: Howard Hughes Medical Institute Announces Selection of 70 New Investigators: Expansion Is Biggest Ever for Nation's Largest Philanthropy The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) today announced the names of 70 scientists who have been selected in a national competition to be appointed as HHMI investigators. This expansion, the largest ever undertaken in one step by the Institute, will increase the number of Hughes investigators by approximately 25 percent. "These outstanding scientists are being invited to join one of the most creative and productive groups of researchers in the world," said Purnell W. Choppin, M.D., president of the Institute, which is the largest philanthropic organization in the United States. "Their selection was the result of an intensely competitive process and is a tribute to their ability and promise as research scientists." The 70 men and women selected must now be formally appointed.
