Extractions: Producers note Sitemap Credits Bibliography Producer's note Patrick White was a great writer and an Australian. He is the only Australian writer yet to have won the Nobel Prize for literature. Many Australians though have not even heard of him and his work seems to have been pushed back into the unreachable shelves of bookcases. During his lifetime his writing was sometimes called 'unAustralian' and his style was criticised as being 'intellectual' meaning not for the ordinary Australian reader. The negative criticisms seem to have hung on even after his style and breadth of topic developed, and as the literary awards and comparisons came through. People still think Patrick White is a British writer and a boring one at that. I wish they could hear the raucous laughter he can cause a reader, the sighs of recognition and the rapture. I read my first Patrick White in 1971 when I first arrived in Australia. I reread The Tree of Man fifteen years later to see if it had the same impact. It did. I have since read and reread all his novels but one. I wish I could share the pleasure they have given me.

Extractions: My Ancestors - Convicts - Patrick White Convict Days Patrick Francis WHITE was born in Tipperary Ireland around 1810. At the age of 17 he was convicted in Tipperary of pig stealing and given a seven year sentence with transportation to Australia. The Marquis of Huntley arrived in Port Jackson NSW on 30 Jan 1828 and the Surgeon's sick list on the voyage out shows a "Pat Whyte" aged 17 as having spent several days on the sick list with abdominal pains. A transcription of his Indent Record and his Certificate of Freedom (granted after serving his sentence on 7th June 1834 at age 24) are shown below. The Certificate of Freedom records much the same as his Indent Record, although a closer look shows that Patrick grew around 5 inches between ages 17 and 24! On arrival in Sydney, Partick was assigned to a Mr Styles of Inverarry Argyle (which I understand to be in the Goulburn / Yass area of NSW). The Sydney Gazette of July 5, 1832 lists Patrick as having been assigned to FCL Thompson of Argyle sometime in the 3 months to 31 March 1832. A similar list in August 1832 shows him as having been assigned to George Brown of Wellington Park. These lists also give Patrick's occupation as "Tailor's boy" Whereas I had always read his occupation as Sailor's boy! Top Family At the time of writing, nothing is known of what Patrick did between obtaining his freedom in 1834 and his marriage in 1841. On 30th August 1841 at St Francis' Roman Catholic church in Melbourne the 31 year old Patrick married 20 year old Eleanor WYNNE. Witnesses to the marriage were Edmund STANLEY and Isabella RISK (?).

In that moment they accomplished what only 85 people have ever done - and somehow managed to be the fastest. Tom and Patrick were the youngest Britons to reach the pole, and Andrew was the first ever African. However, as they had skied for 35 hours non-stop by the time they arrived, they quickly went to sleep. The 1050 km journey had taken 46 days and had been filled with unforgettable experiences. The first few days on the ice had led them over crevass fields where Tom and Patrick managed to scare themselves witless by falling into the gaping holes. Tom and Andrew had also managed to get frostbite on their faces during this time and at the end of day two , all the team wrote in their diaries that there was no way they would make it. However, as the terrain levelled out and their 165lb sleds got lighter with each day of food being co n sumed, their pace and spirits picked up. At the resupply point a month into the journey, they realised that they were making good time and decided to go super-light for the second half of the expedition, and try for the team record. Then the problems started. Tom's pace dropped dramatically after damaging his shoulder falling on a patch of blue ice. He also suffered from the altitude, making an evacuation attempt seem likely as he got weaker and weaker the higher they went. They took the weight from his sled, but things started to look pretty desperate. However, a weather front came over them, changing the direction of the wind and finally allowing them to use their kites. After some near-suicidal incidents they managed to get the kites under control and made excellent mileage south.

Extractions: Palfreyman moves closer to a transcendent state through his willingness to sacrifice self. His failure is that he does this out of a sense of guilt before his retributive God. This discourages him from moving beyond this stage. Palfreyman's failure is fortunate because his messiah-like death reminds the other characters (and so the reader) of the necessity of self-sacrifice in coming closer to the Divine - "All remembered the face of Christ that they had seen at some point in their lives, either in churches or in visions, before retreating from what they had not understood, the paradox of man in Christ and Christ in man" (White 364). This process is similar to St Antony's having to invoke the name of Christ before reaching an understanding of the Divine (Cregg 1980). Another quest illustrated by White is that of discovering a validating narrative that will form a meaningful history. Founding myths have to be re-examined and there must be an acknowledgement that legend and history are inseparable nodes lying on the continuum of human experience. As Wildung points out, White fails to fulfill our expectations of "classic Australian values…that celebration of mateship, the male camaraderie in the outback" (226). He also fails to represent the traditional account of the mass killing of aborigines by white settlers and has one white mystic killed by aborigines instead. These discrepancies and alterations mean that Voss fails to conform to any predetermined genre, a fortunate and necessary failure in the quest for a new, more authentic narrative.
