The honor recognizes Dr. Varmus's service as Director of the National Institutes of Health from 1993 to 1999 and his significant scientific accomplishments. Harold Varmus Receives National Medal of Science from President Bush A leading contributor to cancer research for more than thirty years, he received the 1989 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology with J. Michael Bishop, now Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, for their discovery that normal human and animal cells contain genes capable of becoming cancer genes. This revolutionary discovery led to an aggressive and successful search for the genetic origins of cancer by the scientific community. President George W. Bush will award National Medals of Science to Dr. Varmus and 14 others at a White House ceremony on June 13.

    Extractions: February 5, 1996 Good morning. First let me begin with a note of gratitude to this campus. My first postdoctoral fellow was a graduate of your graduate school. One of my best students, Bruce Bowerman, a native Kansan, was a student in my lab for several years, and now is professor at Oregon University in Eugene, and I'm grateful for the instruction and direction he received here. Two things make me particularly glad to be giving this lecture, but one thing first is that I learned about this lecture from the student, Bruce Bowerman, who said he got a good deal of direction in life from the lectures themselves. But this occasion is special for a couple of reasons for me. First it allows me to pay public tribute to Nancy Landon Kassebaum, whose intelligent and generous support of medical research have made my current job a lot more easy, and whose gracious friendship has made life in Washington much more pleasant. Kansas should be, I know is, very proud of her. Secondly, the inclusion of at least two scientists, Carl Sagan and myself, on the Landon Lecture program this year, recognizes the enormous but often overlooked significance of science in the workings of our society. I want to thank the organizers, the organizing committee for featuring science in this way. Now, I learned yesterday that unfortunately Carl Sagan will not be able to speak as scheduled, and so I'd like to begin by usurping a few of his words from his book "Broca's Brain" at the outset.

Zerhouni in January, affects 66 senior officials including all NIH directors, deputy directors, scientific directors, and clinical directors. These officials now are required to file public disclosure forms, known as SF 278s, rather than the confidential OGE 450s. Varmus' views stand in contrast to positions he advocated while NIH director from 1993 to 1999. During that time, Varmus spearheaded efforts to ease restrictions on staff scientists and directors, allowing them greater freedom to interact with pharmaceutical companies and to engage in outside consulting activities. Those actions were needed, he said Friday, to attract and retain qualified scientists to NIH's intramural research program. The Los Angeles Times reported in December 2003 that several high-level NIH scientists and officials have received a total of more than $2.5 million in consulting fees and stock options from drug companies over the past 10 years. Zerhouni has since suspended approval of all new consulting arrangements, restructured the agency's

Harold has since become President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He has been coming to meetings at CSHL for over a quarter century and is well known for his research accomplishments-including the discovery of cellular oncogenes with Mike Bishop that garnered them a Noble prize-as well as for his extraordinary leadership. As director of the NIH, Harold stressed the importance of biomedical research for the improvement of the human condition, and oversaw a dramatic increase in public support of biomedical science. Harold Varmus's birthday celebration at the Laboratory, which took the form of a two-day symposium on cancer cell biology, was organized by Steve Hughes of the National Cancer Institute (NCI); Titia de Lange of Rockefeller University; Roel Nusse, HHMI investigator at Stanford University Medical Center; all former Varmus laboratory members; and Suzanne Oritz of Varmus' lab. at the NCI. Prominent speakers included long-time collaborator Mike Bishop, fellow retrovirologists David Baltimore and Peter Vogt, and former high school mate Gerry Fink.
