Thus a quantity of the dimer Oxygen, O2 with a molecular weight of 32, does not generate as much pressure as the same amount of Helium, a monatomic molecule with a molecular weight of 4. As the pressure increases, however, the size of the gas's molecules has the opposite effect allowing less and less gas to be added for an equivalent increase in pressure. The phase separation of even only two-component fluid mixtures is considerably more complicated than that of pure fluids. Two-component mixtures have critical curves instead of critical points. Fluid mixtures may have liquid-liquid phase separation in addition to vapor-liquid separation. Some mixtures can separate into two phases of different density and composition even above the critical temperatures of both components.
