Byline: Compiled by Al Binder and the Ward's staff. 58 YEARS AGO Oct. 24, 1944, marks the death of Louis Renault in a French military prison hospital - an accused Nazi collaborator. Born to a middle class Parisian family in February 1877, Louis was the youngest of five children. Renault hated school but had strong mechanical ability. In 1896 Renault patented a steam generator, and three years later formed Societe Renault Freres with brothers Marcel and Fernand on the strength of Louis' patent for a direct-drive system for motor vehicles that replaced the chain-drive system then in general use. By 1914 the company had expanded globally with 31 dealers outside France.

Nissan President and CEO Yoshikazu Hanawa spoke no French. But the two men needed to talk serious business if the French carmaker was going to complete its bid to invest more than $6 billion in the troubled Japanese company. As it worked out, Schweitzer and Hanawa found two common languages: English and automobiles. The deal came together, and today, Renault is Nissan's largest shareholder, and the architect of an aggressive turnaround plan aimed at reversing a decade's worth of red ink. It isn't the first time 57-year-old Schweitzer has faced a challenging turnaround. A former French government official, he was lured to Renault in 1987 at a time when the carmaker's own future was in doubt. But after assuming the company's top post in 1992, Schweitzer launched an aggressive effort to rebuild Renault. He began slashing costs, convinced the French government to privatize the automaker - though the state still holds a 44.2-percent stake - and perhaps most important of all, Schweitzer launched an aggressive product development program that has positioned Renault as one of the most creative forces in the European car market. By combining forces, Renault and Nissan now hope to survive an impending global shakeout in the auto industry.

As a relative of the legendary Dr. Albert Schweitzer and a cousin of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, you could say that great things were expected of him from the outset. He did not disappoint. A graduate of the elite National School of Administration, he was running the French Prime Ministers private office before he had hit the big 4.O , where he developed a reputation for putting in grueling sixteen hour days. His rise within the ranks of Renault has been similarly meteoric - joining Frances most famous company in 1986 and being named as both Chairman and Chief Executive Officer barely six years later. Not bad for a man who readily admits to being extremely shy and introverted. But despite his undoubted brilliance, when Louis Schweitzer came to pen an introduction to the 1996 annual report, he found himself cast into the role of the bearer of bad news. It had been a particularly difficult year, he admitted, pointing to a severe and challenging environment by way of mitigation. Then came the crunch - for the first time in ten years the company had incurred a loss, and a substantial one at that. It was at that point that Schweitzer resolved to turn the fortunes of his company around, little realizing that his decisions would provoke public unrest and throw him into the spotlight as never before.

He was 21 years old. He was the last of five children in a wealthy family of Paris merchants. When he decided to start building cars, his older brothers Fernand and Marcel joined him with their capital and experience. In 1899 Renault Freres was launched on the outskirts of Paris in Boulogne-Billancourt, where Renault continues to have its headquarters. Racing their cars brought great success to Louis and Marcel. Their 1900 victory in the Paris-Bordeaux race ended up in 350 new orders. However, in 1903 Marcel was one of 10 drivers to die in a miserable Paris-Madrid race. Six years later Fernand also died, leaving Louis Renault to carry on alone. Loneliness marked his last years and his death.

Louis Renault celebrated his 21st birthday that time and he chose that occasion for the presentation of his new vehicle, Renault type A. The car had 270 ccm engine capacity, 1.75 Hp output and 3-speed gearbox. It could transport two adults by speed up to 50 km/h. Type A was based on De Dion`s quadricycle. - Renault Brothers(Renault Freres) opened their manufacture on Avenue du Cours in Billancourt. On the 12th June 1899 they took part in the Paris Motor Show already with two models; type A and B. Type B had 450 ccm engine capacity. Both engines were cooled by air. 76 cars were produced this year and 110 people found work in the factory. Renault`s compass was increasing. New models, D and E, appeared. The first international license contract was signed and due to this act a factory in Belgium was founded. Renault was so successful on the 4th Paris Motor Show that it sold out the production of 1902.

The closure is part of a European restructuring project which also includes the axing of 2,800 jobs in France. The response by the unions, of an unusually rapid and massive nature, took the form of strikes in all the group's European plants, and a series of joint demonstrations. On 27 February 1997, the chair and managing director of Renault, Louis Schweitzer , issued a press release outlining the planned closure, by July 1997, of the group's sole factory in Belgium , located in Vilvorde Vilvoorde (north of Brussels ). This decision, presented as irrevocable, is justified by a continuing decline in the profitability of the group and also by the need for the redistribution of production among the remaining plants, which will lead to the cutting of 2,764 jobs in France. This announcement caused the immediate soaring of the price of Renault stock on the Paris stock exchange. The news of the closure of the Belgian subsidiary follows the French Government's refusal to grant early retirement at 51 to 40,000 employees, a measure requested jointly by Renault and
