Extractions: (b. Nov. 27, 1903, Kristiania [now Oslo], Nor.d. Oct. 5, 1976, Coral Gables, Fla., U.S.), Norwegian-born American chemist whose development of a general theory of irreversible chemical processes gained him the 1968 Nobel Prize for Chemistry i.e., to systems in which differences in temperature, pressure, or other factors exist. Onsager also was able to formulate a general mathematical expression about the behaviour of nonreversible chemical processes that has been described as the "fourth law of thermodynamics."

Extractions: At Brown University Onsager submitted a PhD thesis on what is now a classic work on reversible processes, but the authorities turned it down. It was published in 1931 but ignored until the late 1940s; in 1968 it earned Onsager the Nobel Prize. At Yale his paper called 'Solutions to the Mathieu equation of period 4 and certain related functions' was passed in incomprehension among the chemistry, physics, and mathematics departments before Onsager got his PhD. Investigating the connection between microscopic reversibility and transport processes, Onsager found that the key to the problem is the distribution of molecules and energy caused by random thermal motion. Ludwig Boltzmann had shown that the nature of thermal equilibrium is statistical and that the statistics of the spontaneous deviation is determined by the entropy. Using this principle Onsager derived a set of equations known as Onsager's law of reciprocal relations, sometimes called the fourth law of thermodynamics.

Extractions: An essay prepared for the National Academy of Sciences is presented on the website of Yale University. (Onsager served as a professor at Yale from 1933-1972.) Authored by H. Christopher Longuet-Higgins and Michael E. Fisher, portions will be unfathomable to those not versed in physics. For example: "The non-equilibrium state itself would be represented by an ensemble that maximized the entropy S subject to the [alpha particle]i having specified values; the 'forces' conjugate to the [alpha particle]i would be the partial derivatives of S with respect to the displacements...." The article is, however, quite well written, and worth reading even by those who will skip over the technical portions. It captures the essence of this man of extraordinary scientific accomplishment who, typically of Norwegians, eschewed pomposity. It tells of his wit, his humor, and his outlook. This version lacks equations and illustrations. The full version appears, along with articles on other deceased members of the academy, on the website of the Universal Library Project, located at Carnegie Mellon University. It's slow to load, starting as it does on Page 183. The text will appear well in advance of the graphics.

Extractions: By Janet Kerlin P hysics professor J. Michael Kosterlitz received the 2000 Lars Onsager Prize of the American Physical Society at its March meeting in Minneapolis. Kosterlitz received the prize along with his colleague, David Thouless of the University of Seattle, for recognition of their 1973 paper in which they came up with a new definition of an ordered phase of matter. The paper was written when they were at Birmingham University in England. The recognition has come decades later, Kosterlitz said, because the paper "was fairly controversial when we did it and it took a while for it to be accepted." In addition, the Onsager prize was created only a few years ago and has been awarded annually since 1995. The prize, which consists of $15,000, is given to recognize outstanding research in theoretical statistical physics including the quantum fluids. The theory of Kosterlitz and Thouless was controversial "because it disagreed with the accepted wisdom of the time," Kosterlitz said. "Dave Thouless and I just looked at the problem in an unusual point of view which allowed calculations to be done.... Basically we argued that the definition of a two-dimensional crystal should be modified. What was important about a crystal was not the order of the atoms, but the fact that the crystal solid would have some rigidity."
