Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill (1888-1953) One of the greatest American playwrights, restless and bold experimenter, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936. Among O'Neill's best-known plays are ANNA CHRISTINE (pub. 1922), DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS (pub.1924), MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (pub. 1931), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (pub. 1956), and THE ICEMAN COMETH (prod. 1946). O'Neill's plays range in style from satire to tragedy. They often depict people who have no hope of controlling their destinies. "... we all are more or less the slaves of conventions, or of discipline, or of a rigid formula of some sort." Eugene O'Neill was born in New York into an Irish-Catholic theatrical family. His early life was restless: his father, who was an actor, spent most of his career touring in the lead role of the popular melodrama The Count of Monte Cristo. In 1895 O'Neill was enrolled in the St. Aloysius Academy for Boys, and transferred in 1900 to the DeLa Salle Institute in Manhattan. During these years his mother's addiction to morphine left profound emotional scars on the growing O'Neill. He also found out that his own birth had precipitated his mother's addiction. In 1902 Ella O'Neill tried to commit suicide. After renouncing Catholicism, O'Neill entered in 1902 the Betts Academy in Stamford, a non-sectarian preparatory school. Six years later he entered Princeton University, but left it after a year. During this period he spent most of the time in New York waterfront bars and brothels.

His early plays, appearing between 1916 and 1920, helped initiate American theaterâs shift away from elegant parlor dramas and toward gritty naturalistic plays. OâNeillâs later plays covered varied ground, leaping from expressionismâan attempt to depict subjective feelings or emotions rather than objective realityâto comedy, and finally to modern reworkings of classical myth. His best tragic plays reflect his statement that he was âalways conscious of the Force behindâFate, God, our biological past creating our present, whatever one calls itâMystery certainlyâand of the one eternal tragedy of Man in his glorious, self-destructive struggleâ¦.â

Although born in New York City, O'Neill's early life was intimately connected to New London, Connecticut . His father was stage actor James O'Neill , who had owned property in New London before Eugene's birth. As an adult, O'Neill was employed by the New London Telegraph , and wrote his first plays while living there. ( Connecticut College maintains an O'Neill archive and the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Extractions: O'Neill, Eugene Gladstone Born October 6th, 1888, in New York City. Son of James O'Neill, the popular romantic actor. First seven years of my life spent mostly in hotels and railroad trains, my mother accompanying my father on his tours of the United States, although she never was an actress, disliked the theatre, and held aloof from its people. Began to write plays in the Fall of 1913. Wrote the one-act Bound East for Cardiff in the Spring of 1914. This is the only one of the plays written in this period which has any merit. In the Fall of 1914, I entered Harvard University to attend the course in dramatic technique given by Professor George Baker. I left after one year and did not complete the course. The Fall of 1916 marked the first production of a play of mine in New York - Bound East for Cardiff - which was on the opening bill of he Provincetown Players. In the next few years this theatre put on nearly all of my short plays, but it was not until 1920 that a long play Beyond the Horizon was produced in New York. It was given on Broadway by a commercial managemeet - but, at first, only as a special matinee attraction with four afternoon performances a week. However, some of the critics praised the play and it was soon given a theatre for a regular run, and later on in the year was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. I received this prize again in 1922 for Anna Christie and for the third time in 1928 for Strange Interlude.
