Tres años más tarde, su padre abandona el hogar, y Gabriela entonces aún Lucila Godoy Alcayaga- parte entonces con su madre a Montegrande, pequeño poblado del valle del Elqui, a vivir con su medio hermana, Emelinda Molina. Allí transcurre su infancia, fuertemente determinada por su entorno natural, y por las enseñanzas y la influencia de su hermana, quien ejerce como maestra rural. A los 11 años, es enviada a estudiar a Vicuña, pero rápidamente abandona la escuela, acusada injustamente de robar papel y hostigada por sus compañeras. Con esa experiencia concluyen sus estudios formales y, en adelante, toda su formación será autodidacta. Muy tempranamente, se dedica a las dos actividades que la ocuparían intensamente a lo largo de su vida: la enseñanza y la literatura. A los 14 años comienza a trabajar como maestra en una escuela de Compañía Baja, pequeño poblado de la cuarta región. Al año siguiente, publica sus primeros poemas y textos en prosa en el periódico Coquimbo , de La Serena. Se inicia, de ese modo, no sólo su carrera como escritora, sino también una vinculación con la prensa escrita que tendría larga duración.

Fue una destacada educadora que visitó México (donde cooperó en la reforma educacional), Estados Unidos y Europa, estudiando las escuelas y métodos educativos de estos países. Además fue profesora invitada en las universidades de Barnard, Middlebury y Puerto Rico. A partir de 1933, y durante veinte años, desempeñó el cargo de cónsul de su país en ciudades como Madrid, Lisboa y Los Ángeles, entre otras. Su poesía, llena de calidez, emoción y marcado misticismo, ha sido traducida al inglés, francés, italiano, alemán y sueco, e influyó en la obra creativa de muchos escritores latinoamericanos posteriores, como Pablo Neruda y Octavio Paz. Sus diversos poemas escritos para los niños se recitan y cantan en muy diversos países. En 1945 se convirtió en el primer escritor latinoamericano en recibir el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Posteriormente, en 1951, se le concedió el Premio Nacional de Literatura de su país. Hija de un profesor rural y con una hermanastra de la misma profesión, Gabriela Mistral, con temprana vocación por el magisterio, llegó a ser directora de varios liceos fiscales. Su fama como poetisa (aunque ella prefería llamarse "poeta") comenzó en 1914 luego de haber sido premiada en unos Juegos Florales por sus Sonetos de la muerte

Extractions: GABRIELA MISTRAL VIDA Y OBRA 1889 El 7 de abril nace la poetisa en la ciudad de Vicuña, cuarta región. Sus padres fueron Juan Jerónimo Godoy y Petronila Alcayaga, quienes la bautizaron con el nombre de Lucila. 1892 Lucila tiene tres años cuando su padre abandona la familia y se dedica a recorrer tierras. 1904 Colabora en el periódico Coquimbo, de La Serena, utilizando los seudónimos de "Alguien", "Soledad" y "Alma". 1905 A los quince años empieza a trabajar, ejerciendo una ayudantía en la Escuela de La Compañía, aldea vecina a Vicuña. 1906 Tiene 17 años. Conoce a Romelio Ureta, empleado de Ferrocarriles, quien fue el amor de su vida. Durante este período, Lucila sirve una plaza de maestra en la escuela de La Cantera. 1907 Escribe para los periódicos La Voz de Elqui y La Reforma. 1908 Figura en la antología Literatura Coquimbana de L. Carlos Soto Ayala, en la cual éste le dedica un breve estudio y selecciona tres prosas poéticas de la autora: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". 1909 El 25 de noviembre, a los 26 años de edad, se suicida en Coquimbo Romelio Ureta. En sus bolsillos se encontró una tarjeta con el nombre de Lucila Godoy. Ella es inspectora en el Liceo de Señoritas de La Serena.

Extractions: G abriela Mistral, chilena, Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1945, nació en una región del norte de Chile que se caracteriza por la limpidez de sus cielos, tanto así que cerca de valle del Elqui, la patria chica de la escritora, se ubica el cerro Tololo que tiene uno de los observatorios astronómicos más importantes del mundo Mirar el cielo es algo habitual en la tierra en que nació la poeta, lugares como Montegrande y Vicuña fascinan a quienes los visitan y por lo mismo Gabriela nunca olvidó su querido valle, ni sus montañas, ni sus cielos. Profesora por vocación y necesidad tempranas recorrió casi todo el largo país que la vio nacer haciendo clases en escuelas y liceos. Reconocida pronto por sus cualidades literarias y pedagógicas viaja a México invitada por el gobierno de ese país para participar en la Reforma Educacional el año 1921. Por entonces sus poemas habían aparecido en diarios y revistas de Chile y del extranjero, así como también artículos en prosa sobre temas pedagógicos, literarios, artísticos, sociales y sobre la condición de la mujer en es época. Solo en 1922 y gracias a la ayuda del profesor español Federico de Onís que impartía clases en la Universidad de Columbia en Nueva York, se publicó su primer libro de poemas DESOLACIÓN. Desde allí sus viajes la llevaron a Europa, a Norteamérica, Sudamérica, el Caribe y a Chile ocasionalmente. Ella reconocía que estos constantes viajes la hacían vivir en pleno vagabundaje.
