Americký fyzik nìmeckého pùvodu Albert Abraham Michelson se narodil v roce 1852 v Nìmecku, ale rodina se záhy pøestìhovala do San Franciska. Bìhem života se Michelson stal profesorem na univerzitì ve Worcesteru a Chicagu a v letech 1923 – 1927 byl prezidentem národní akademie vìd USA. Celý svùj život se Michelson vìnoval práci v oblast optiky. Ze zaèátku se zabýval analýzou svìtla a svìtelných jevù. Jako první provedl bìhem své studijní cesty v Berlínì v letech 1880 – 1881 názorný pokus na existenci tzv. éterového vìtru a v roce 1887 v Clevelandu tento pokus s ještì vìtší pøesností zopakoval. Michelson zjistil, že se svìtlo šíøí všemi smìry stejnou rychlostí nezávisle na pohybu jeho zdroje. Tento objev mìl pro fyziku obrovský význam a vedl A. Einsteina k formulaci základního postulátu teorie relativity – k principu konstantní rychlosti svìtla. Pro svùj pokus si Michelson zkonstruoval pøístroj – interferometr, pomocí kterého provedl i jiná významná mìøení. V letech 1892 – 1893 pomocí nìj srovnával délku metru s délkou svìtelné vlny a zkoumal strukturu spektrálních èar. Pozdìji sestrojil také hvìzdný interferometr, který umožòoval mìøit úhlové prùmìry hvìzd.

Er erhielt ein Stipendium an der US Navel Academy in Annapolis. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums fuhr Michelson zunächst ein Jahr auf See bevor er als Ausbilder für physikalische Wissenschaften an der Navel Academy angestellt wurde. Durch die Schriften von Leon Foucault und Armand Fizeau angeregt befasste er sich mit der Bestimmung der Lichtgeschwindigkeit und verbesserte das Ergebnis auf 299910 +/- 50 km /s. Für die Jahre 1880 -1882 erhielt Michelson von der Navel Academy die Erlaubnis für weiterführende Studien in Europa. So arbeitete er bei Helmholtz in Berlin, wo er das nach ihm benannte Michelson-Interferometer entwickelte. Varianten dieses Instrumentes wurden an verschiedenen Orten entwickelt. He came to the United States with his parents when he was two years old. From New York, the family made its way to Virginia City, Nevada and San Francisco. At 17, Michelson entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and graduated in 1873. Early on Michelson was fascinated with the sciences and the problem of measuring the speed of light in particular. After two years of studies in Europe he resigned from the navy in 1881 and set out to determine the speed of light with an unprecedented accuracy using his interferometer. His value remained the best for a generation and when it was improved, Michelson was the one who did it. In 1883 he accepted a position as professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland and concentrated on improving his interferometer. By 1887 with the help of his colleague Edward Williams Morley he conducted what was to be known as the Michelson-Morley experiment. Their experiment showed that there was no significant motion of the Earth relative to the ether, the hypothetical medium in which light waves were supposed to travel. This result later became the foundation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. After serving as professor at Clark University at Worcester, Massachusetts from 1889, in 1892 Michelson was appointed professor and the first head of the department of physics at the newly organized University of Chicago. In 1907 Michelson became the first American to receive a Nobel prize in physics.
