    Extractions: "Woman in the Dark" erschien 1933 in drei Fortsetzungen im Magazin "Liberty", was wohl findigen Leuten lang genug erschien. Es ist ja eine bekannte Tatsache, daß wegen Erbschafts- und Rechtestreitigkeiten einige Erzählungen Hammetts Jahrzehnte nicht mehr veröffentlicht wurden und dem willigen Käufer nun als "neuentdeckt" angeboten werden. So auch dieser "Roman einer gefährlichen Liebe", der 1988 bei Alfred Knopf, der ebenfalls Raymond Chandler in den USA verlegte, publiziert wurde. In der deutschen Übersetzung nimmt die Geschichte - großgedruckt - vielleicht 75 Seiten ein, der Rest ist ein kompetentes Vorwort Robert B. Parkers ("Spenser"), der ja immerhin seine Doktorarbeit über das Werk Hammetts, Chandlers und Macdonalds schrieb. Das Buch ist jedoch nicht allein deswegen schlecht. "Die Frau im Dunkel" gibt ein prima grobes Pulp ab, ist für Hammett geradezu eklatant undynamisch. Das fängt mit einer äußerst schwachen Figurenzeichnung an und setzt sich mit der äußeren Handlung fort. Der erste Teil gleicht einem schlechten Theaterstück, ständig betritt oder verläßt jemand Brazils Haus, alles wirkt sehr gezwungen. Der Rest der Handlung verläuft, abgesehen von einigen gewalttätigen Intermezzi, in Versatzstücken ab, egal ob das das Versteck bei Brazils Gaunerfreunden ist, der Auftritt der abgekochten Cops oder die Flucht Brazils aus dem Fenster. Dazu kommen schwache Dialoge, die nicht nur nichtssagend sind, sondern auch noch an manchen Stellen gerade das falsche sagen.

Erzählt wird also die Geschichte der Getreidefirma Johann Buddenbrook zu Lübeck, und zwar von dem Augenblick ihrer größten Blüte bis zum Erlöschen. Solange - in der Zeit glücklicher Kaufmannschaft - ein umsichtiger und lebensfroher Patriarch wie Johann senior die Geschicke lenkt, ist Krisenstimmung unbekannt, der Traum von Dauer scheint erfüllbar. Doch schon des alten Johann Sohn, der Konsul, zeigt eine aufschlußreiche, eine signalhafte Empfindsamkeit, als er an die Vorbesitzer des Hauses erinnert, die, ehemals nicht weniger reputierlich und selbstgewiß als die Buddenbrooks, eines Tages verarmten, davonzogen, starben. Noch ist das Bibelwort "Alles hat seine Zeit" nicht gefallen, doch das Unabwendbare ist bereits angekündigt; die religiösen Neigungen des Konsuls, seine Ämterlast, seine Art zu denken lassen schon Gefährdung ahnen. Immer hat mich dies "Stück Seelengeschichte des europäischen Bürgertums" bewegt; immer empfand ich Mitleid mit denen, die sich am Ende die Gesetzmäßigkeit des Verfalls eingestehen mußten, immer hinterließ die Erbarmungslosigkeit in den Konventionen einer bürgerlichen Welt eine schmerzhafte Ratlosigkeit. Auch bei wiederholter Lektüre ist man beteiligt: Man ist ergriffen und amüsiert und wehmütig, ganz so, als gehe man mit Personen von höchster Gegenwärtigkeit um. Obwohl der detailsüchtige Autor immer wieder Jahreszahlen nennt, längst Vergangenes beschwört: Die Geschichte, die so gelassen erzählt wird, kommt mir nicht als historisches Geschehen vor. Im Gegenteil: Ich habe das Gefühl, an einem überzeitlichen Ereignis teilzuhaben. Die Unerschöpflichkeit, aber auch die Übertragbarkeit eines Gleichnisses werden deutlich. Hier hat - und daran besteht für mich kein Zweifel - der Verfall einer Familie einen endgültigen Ausdruck gefunden.
