The Nobel foundation has announced the Centennial celebrations, to be held in Stockholm and Oslo, beginning from the 1st of December 2001 and culminating on 10th December when the year 2001 laureates receive their prizes. In the context of the centennial, the awards connected with diabetes need special mention. The important one was the 1923 prize for Medicine and Physiology awarded to Dr. Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941) and Dr. John James Richard Macleod (1876- 1935) for the discovery of insulin. The other prize was the 1947 prize to Dr.Carl Ferdinand Cori (1896-1984), Dr. Gerty Theresa nee Radnitz Cori (1896-1957) and Dr. Bernardo Alberto Houssay (1887-1971) for their discovery of course of catalytic conversion of Glycogen. The 1923 prize to Banting and Macleod was probably the only occasion in the last 100 years of Nobel prizes, when the prize was given the year after the discovery. It is probably by providence that such a thing happened. Choice of Dr. Banting and Dr. Macleod for the prize has been debated, as there was no recognition given to Dr. Charles Best. To explain this omission we should go back a few years earlier to 1920 when the Danish scientist 'Dr. Schack August Steenberg Krogh' (1874-1949) won the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for discovering capillary motor regulating mechanism.

Innerhalb von nur zwei Jahren entdeckten vier Forscher das Insulin und entwickelten es weiter bis zur medizinischen Anwendung am Menschen. Die Lösungsansätze hat ohne Zweifel der kanadische Arzt Frederick Banting durch seine Überlegungen geschafften. Sein Mitarbeiter Charles Herbert Best war damals noch ein Student. Die Zuckerkrankheit kennt man schon seit dem Altertum. Die Kenntnis der Ursachen und erfolgreiche Behandlungsmethoden blieben der Forschung vorerst versagt. Die Empfehlung einer Diät war die gängigste Behandlungsmethode. Namhafte Physiologen hatten sich im 19. Jahrhundert intensiv um die Erforschung von Diabetes bemüht, und es wurden zahlreiche Versuche seit 1890 angestellt, um brauchbare Pankreasextrakte zur Behandlung zu gewinnen. Es war daher sehr überraschend, als das im Vergleich zu bekannten Forscherexperten und Forscherteams unerfahrene Forscherduo Banting und der studentische Best in weniger als einem Jahr das Hauptproblem der Insulinisolierung lösen und die Anwendung im Humanexperiment auch tatsächlich erfolgreich beschließen konnte.

Diabetes er en sygdom, der medfører at blodets indhold af sukkerstoffer fra mad og drikkevarer er højere end hos folk der ikke har sygdommen længe efter at et måltid er indtaget. Kulhydraterner i vores mad nedbrydes i vores krop til glukose, der overføres til blodet via tarmen. Ved stigende blodsukkerniveau frigøres insulin fra bugspytkirtlens Lagerhanske øer, hvor det produceres af beta-celler. Insulinen er nødvendig for at glukosen kan komme ind i kroppens celler, hvor det bruges til forbrænding til energi eller oplagres. Når man lider af diabetes har man enten for lidt eller intet insulin, hvilket skyldes at kroppen har dannet antistoffer mod dens egne beta-celler, der derved ødelægges. Ved insulin mangel kommer der som sagt ikke nok glukose ind i cellerne, og de vil i stedet brænde triglycerider af for at få dækket deres energibehov. Når fede syrer omdannes til triglycerider, dannes der samtidig ketonstoffer, der påvirker kroppens surhedsgrad og som i store mængder forgifter den.Når man mangler insulin dannes der disse store mængder ketonstoffer, hvilket han blive livsfarligt, også fordi man samtidig har et stort sukkertab med urinen, da nyrerne kun er i stand til at tilbageholde glukosen i blodet til en vis grænse.
