Willard Frank Libby was born into a farming family on December 17, 1908 in Grand Valley, Colorado. He studied chemistry at Berkeley, earning a Ph.D. in 1933. During World War II, Libby played a small part in the atomic bomb project by researching isotopes of uranium. (Isotopes are versions of atoms with different numbers of neutrons. They therefore have different atomic weights such as uranium-235 and uranium-238.) Libby then studied an isotope of carbon. Normally, carbon has an atomic weight of 12, but in 1940 scientists isolated carbon-14, an isotope created naturally by cosmic rays hitting our atmosphere. Small amounts of carbon-14 are found in the carbon dioxide in the air therefore, all plants and animals incorporate traces of carbon-14 into their bodies as they breathe and eat. After an organism dies, the carbon-14 inside it breaks down. Since carbon-14 breaks down at a constant rate it has a half-life of about 5,730 years it is possible to determine very precisely the age of certain old items by examining the amount of carbon-14 in them.

For this development he was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1960. Libby received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the faculty from 1933 to 1945. He was with the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago (1945-59) and then was professor of chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, until his death. While associated with the Manhattan Project (1941-45), Libby helped develop a method for separating uranium isotopes, an essential step in the creation of the atomic bomb. In 1946 he showed that tritium, the heaviest isotope of hydrogen, was produced by cosmic radiation. The following year he and his students developed the carbon-14 dating technique. This technique is used to date material derived from former living organisms as old as 50,000 years. It measures small amounts of radioactivity from the carbon-14 in organic or carbon-containing materials and is able to identify older objects as those having less radioactivity. Libby also served on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (1955-59) and wrote Radiocarbon Dating (1952).

What I would like to do in a few minutes is to briefly review my scientific activities during the last 3 1/2 decades, mentioning most the individuals who I had the privilege to collaborate with and learn from. My first scientific paper was inspired in 1965 by Willard Libby who suggested that I look into reasons for C-14 variations. This led to Rich Lingenfelter who had already done C-14 production calculations based on his neutron production work. Our scientific collaboration, which is still ongoing, thus has lasted for 35 years, I believe a real record. In 1966 Rich was invited to give a talk on nuclear reactions in solar flares at the University of Pennsylvania meeting on High Energy Nuclear Reactions in Astrophysics. Rich asked me to work with him on this paper in which we did quite good calculations on gamma ray line emission from solar flares. The paper, published in 1967, was sufficiently impressive for

Extractions: If human history is about time, then geology is about deep time: the enormous tracts of history that stretch away beneath us back to when the Earth was formed. And to understand geology we have to understand the date and ordering of events in the geological record; we have to be able to quantify deep time itself. Time means two very different things to geologists. On the one hand there is relative time - the ordering of rock strata as recognised in a cliff section or in a deep sea core - and on the other there is absolute or chronometric time. It is this that I call 'real time'. Relative time is divided up using qualitative criteria; its passing is recognised by the changing succession of rock types or fossils as one moves 'up-section' ( ie to successively younger strata). For modern geologists there are other refinements: changing signatures of magnetism or stable isotopes in sedimentary rocks are used to recognise the passage of relative time. But the way that real time - numerical ages - is recognised in geology comes from one area of physical chemistry only: radioactivity.
