He shared the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Pedersen and Donald J. Cram for the development and application of molecules with highly selective, structure specific interactions, i.e., molecules that can "recognize" each other and choose which other molecules they will form complexes with.

Extractions: Why do you think your paper is highly cited? It is highly cited because it concerns the very active fields of drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, and combinatorial chemistry. Does it describe a new discovery or a new methodology that's useful to others? It describes a methodology towards the discovery of biologically active molecules through a new approach to combinatorial chemistry. Could you summarize the significance of your paper in laymen's terms?

His father, Pierre Lehn was a baker. His mother Marie kept the house and the shop. He was the oldest of four sons and helped out in the shop with his first brother. He grew up in Rosheim during the years of the second world war, went to primary school after the war and, at age eleven, he entered high school, the College Freppel, located in Obernai. He also became interested in sciences, especially chemistry, so that he obtained the baccalaureat in Philosophy in July 1957 and in Experimental Sciences in September of the same year. Having obtained his degree of Docteur es Sciences (Ph. D. ) in June of 1963, he spent a year in the laboratory of Robert Burns Woodward at Harvard University, where he took part in the immense enterprise of the total synthesis of Vitamin B . After his return to Strasbourg, he began to work in the area of physical organic chemistry.
