I was lucky to be at a "press conference" in which Dr. Lee, a Taiwanese Nobel Laureate (Chemistry, 1986), publicly supported Chen. He also answered questions from reporters. Dr. Lee said that even though he had been very critical of the Chen Administration, he believed that Chen Administration, unlike the opposition, had the capacity and determination to continue the political reform in Taiwan. Loss of genome stability is a hallmark of tumor cells that is believed to be important in tumor progression and cancer therapeutic response. Deregulated cell cycle control, failure of cell cycle checkpoint activation, and repair of DNA damage all contribute to loss of genome stability. Study of familial clustered cancers and hereditary cancers in the past two decades has facilitated the identification of tumor suppressor genes whose mutation results in cancer predisposition. Many of these tumor suppressor proteins are involved in these cellular processes Yuan, S.-S. F, Cox, L. A., Dasika, G.K. and

Elder Lee Yuan Chin's writing is completely integral with Buddhadharma and with the teachings of the Pure Land sect; it flows and presents the main ideas in a way that is easy to understand. Each morning and afternoon session began with a lecture by a Nobel Laureate, followed by a discussion session and a special follow-up lecture or a working group meeting. The working groups, which had open, rotating memberships, discussed applications of chemical sciences in the Middle East. Working group meetings were scheduled so that each attendee had an opportunity to participate in every group. Each working group developed a set of recommendations that were presented in a plenary working session at the end of the conference. Many of the conferees were members or presidents of their national academies of science and/or their national chemical societies. In many cases, participants were encouraged to attend by the ministers of science of their respective countries. One, Dr. Venice Gouda, is the former science minister of Egypt. Although the conference was not a CHEMRAWN meeting, the CHEMical Research Applied to World Needs committee of IUPAC helped by obtaining a contribution from UNESCO on behalf of the project. As in CHEMRAWN conferences, the conference working groups served as Future Actions Committees by meeting to discuss recommendations in the following areas:

Extractions: PRESIDENT-ELECT SAYS INAUGURATION SPEECH WON'T PROVOKE BEIJING Taipei, May 3 (CNA) ROC President-elect Chen Shui-bian said on Wednesday that his inauguration speech on May 20 will satisfy the United States and will not provoke mainland China. Chen made the remarks while voicing his views on cross-strait relations during a meeting with Natale H. Bellocchi, former chairman and managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). Chen, pointing out that mainland China will never be satisfied unless Taiwan capitulates, reaffirmed his optimism about cross-strait relations. He said that he will insist on Taiwan's sovereignty, safety and dignity but will extend his goodwill to the mainland. He also for the first time revealed the outline of his inauguration speech, saying he knows that the mainland China and the rest of the world will be closely watching his words for signs to ease strained cross-strait relations. He said the "United States will definitely be satisfied with my speech, the world community will have a positive response, and mainland China, even if it is still not satisfied, will not be able to say that we are provoking or creating trouble." Chen said that his speech will focus mainly on Taiwan's future development, with an emphasis on domestic reforms, democratic development, and economic progress and prosperity, with the topic of cross-strait relations not being a big part of it.

When bronchial hyperreactivity develops during airway mucosal inflammation, the excitability of chemosensitive nerve endings innervating the airways is enhanced. The long-range goal of our research is to advance our understanding of the properties and functions of this specific group of sensory endings. Our current research focuses on the mechanisms by which hypersensitivity develops in these sensory nerves. In healthy lungs, these tachykinin-containing sensory terminals play an important role in protecting the airways against inhaled irritants; and stimulation of these sensory endings elicit extensive cardiopulmonary reflex responses such as cough, bronchospasm, hypersecretion of mucus, etc. However, when these nerve endings become hypersensitive as a result of inflammation and injury of the airway mucosa, a given level of stimulus will then evoke a more sustained and intense stimulation. Thus, greater intensities of the reflex reactions as well as the neurogenic inflammation mediated through local release of tachykinins will lead to the development of bronchial hyperreactivity.
