He was brought up in the Washington Heights District of Upper Manhattan, New York City, where he received his education in Public School 46, Junior High School 164 and Stuyvesant High School. From 1941 to 1944 he studied at Columbia College, where he obtained his B.A. with honours in Zoology (premedical course), and from 1944 to 1946 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University Medical School. Here he carried out part-time research with Professor F.J. Ryan in the Department of Zoology. Subsequently he went to the Department of Microbiology and Botany at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., as Research Fellow of the Jane Coffin Childs Fund for Medical Research and, during 1946-1947, as a graduate student with Professor E.L. Tatum . He was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1948.

My father was an orthodox rabbi, and I think he had a very temporary position in Montclair after I was born, and then six months later he got a more permanent position in a synagogue in Washington Heights, which is when we moved to New York City LP - Did your parents have a large formative influence on you? JL - Certainly so. My father was quite an idealistic person. He was committed to a religious vocation, and I reacted quite strongly to that: I was as early as I could remember interested in scientific and secular affairs. We still shared a great deal. He eventually gave in, and said "Joshua, I guess there are many ways to follow the Torah , and if you want to seek truth through science, that's alright too."

Several years later Lederberg discovered that viruses called bacteriophages could transfer genetic material from one bacterium to another, a phenomenon he called transduction. Lederberg showed that although bacteria reproduce only by dividing, they are able to effect sexual recombination by processes that result in exchange of genetic material between different bacteria.
