Extractions: An afternoon at University College London 8th October 2003 Supported by UCL Biomedicine and the Physiological Society. University College London organised an afternoon in memory of Bernard Katz. It was held on Wednesday 8th October 2003 in the AV Hill Lecture Theatre, Medical Sciences, Gower Street. It consisted of short informal talks and reminiscences from a variety of speakers who knew and worked with him. In order, these were: David Katz, Sir Andrew Huxley, Paul Fatt, John Nicholls, Bert Sakmann, Bob Lieberman and Jonathan Katz. The afternoon started with tea in the South Cloisters of UCL, and was followed by an informal reception where there was small exhibition of pictures associated with Bernard Katz and the Biophysics Department. The afternoon was organised by Jonathan Ashmore, David Colquhoun, Stuart Cull-Candy, Don Jenkinson and Sally Page.

Extractions: Born in Leipzig, Germany, he was educated at the Albert Gymnasium in that city from 1921 to 1929 and went on to study medicine at the University of Leipzig. He graduated in 1934 and fled to Britain in February 1935, the rise of Hitler having made his mixed Russian-Jewish heritage dangerous. He went to work at UCL, initially under the tutelage of Archibald Vivian Hill. He finished his PhD in 1938 and won a Carnegie Fellowship to study with John C. Eccles at Sydney Hospital. He was naturalised in 1941 and joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. He spent the war in the Pacific as a radar officer. He married Marguerite Penly in 1945 and returned to UCL as an assistant director in 1946. Back in England he also worked with the 1963 Nobel prize winners Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley. Katz was made a professor at UCL in 1952 and head of biophysics, he was also elected to the Royal Society. He stayed as head of biophysics until 1978 when he became emeritus professor. His research uncovered fundamental properties of synapses, the junctions across which nerve cells signal to each other and to other types of cells. By the 1950s, he was studying the biochemistry and action of acetylcholine, a signalling molecule with which synapses linking "motor nerves" to muscles stimulate contraction. Katz won the Nobel for his discovery that neurotransmitter release at synapses is "quantal"that is, that at any particular synapse the amount of neurotransmitter released is never less than a certain amount, and if more is always an integral number times this amount. This circumstance arises, scientists now know, because, prior to their release into the synaptic gap, transmitter molecules reside in like-sized subcellular packages known as synaptic vesicles (more at exocytosis).

Katz's discovery in the 1950s of the "quantum" character of nerve junction biochemistry transformed scientific perception of the nature of signal processing in the nervous system. For this work he received a knighthood in 1969 and, in 1970, shared the Nobel Prize for physiology of medicine with Julius Axelrod of America and Ulf von Euler of Sweden.

Extractions: After several years working in Australia with John Carew Eccles, another renowned physiologist, and later with the Royal Australian Air Force as a radar officer, Katz returned to UCL, becoming a member of the dynamic, post-war neurophysiology group working in the United Kingdom. He succeeded Hill as a professor of biophysics at UCL in 1952, presiding over a highly active department until he retired in 1978. His research work deciphered how nerve impulses are transmitted to muscle fibers to achieve muscle contraction. He established the quantal hypothesis of neuromuscular transmission in which quanta, or packets, of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine are released at the neuromuscular junction, with each quantum triggering a very brief signal in the target muscle fibre. The significance of Katz's work was recognized when he was named co-winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize for medicine or physiology, together with the US scientist Julius Axelrod and the Swede Ulf von Euler, for answering "questions of fundamental importance for the understanding of the mechanism underlying the transmission between nerve cells." The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, singled out Katz for his "discoveries concerning the mechanism for the release of the transmitter acetylcholine from the nerve terminals at the nerve-muscle junction."
