Karle, Jerome Karle, Theodor Wieland, Wolfgang Burgermeister, and Bernhard Witkop [Phe ,Val ] antamanide, a synthetic, biologically active analog of the cyclic decapeptide antitoxin isolated from Amanita phalloides, has been crystallized from a mixture of n-hexane and methyl acetate, and its conformation has been established by the direct method of x-ray diffraction analysis, i.e., without the benefit of any heavy atom. The uncomplexed molecule contains a 2-fold rotation axis and cis peptide linkages between Pro -Pro and Pro -Pro . Otherwise, its conformation differs extensively from that of the Na

Extractions: Jerome Karle (1918 - ) American biophysicist who worked with Herbert Hoffmann to invent a mathematical formula that determines the molecular structure of crystals. Karle also worked on the Manhattan Project. Prior to Karle, it was not possible to accurately plot the three-dimensional structures of molecules. Using a new technique, the two men measured the angles of the deflect X-ray beams. The mathematical formula translated the dot pattern of the deflected X-rays into a map showing the exact position of atoms within a structure.

Next I was born in New York City in 1918 into a family that had a number of artistic people among its members. My father's brother and a sister's husband were probably the best known. The latter, Ivan Olinsky, taught for many years at the Art Students' League in New York City. I have been told that my paternal grandfather professionally made artistic decorations in peoples' homes. The propensity for artistic endeavors extended to my generation and beyond. My mother was an excellent pianist and organist and it was one of her hopes that I would become a professional pianist. As a youth I was entered into "Music Week" competitions in New York City. I had some modest success, but found at an early age that I had no taste for public performance. On the other hand, I was strongly attracted to science as a lifelong career at an early age. I had the privilege of attending schools in the New York City public school system. Their standards of education, character building and discipline were very high and I, most certainly, benefited from them. They separated out the more advanced students and permitted them to progress at their own pace. In my case, this occasionally led to some curious circumstances. In my senior year in high school (Abraham Lincoln), the girls would join the boys to practice dancing. I was 14 years old at the time and the girls were the usual 17-18 years old. The physical discrepancy between this 14 year old boy and 17-18 year old girls was considerable. Their first reaction was incredulity but after a while they got used to my presence and even danced with me. I took the chemistry and physics courses that were available, both taught by the same man. He recognized my interests and was very encouraging to me.

Extractions: of the information society in Africa should be the role of leadership" Congress Newsletter presents an interview of today's keynote speaker Dr. Jerome Karle, Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1985 for his work in crystal structure analysis. Apart from his scientific endeavors, Dr. Karle has been associ-ated in various ways with a number of groups and organizations that are concerned with social issues, including the Committee on Human Rights of the National Academy of Sciences, ChildRight Worldwide and Committee of Concerned Scientists. Dr. Karle is currently president of the World Innovation Foundation, which was founded by Glenn Theodore Seabourg and numbers several Nobel Laureates among its members. Our world is currently witnessing a lot of inequalities, and the economic gap between developed and developing countries is ever widening. There is a serious risk that the divide will become unbridgeable if tough measures are not taken and if stakeholders are not conscious of the necessity for these measures. Scientists and engineers hold a great responsibility in this respect because technology and science are at the origin of this divide. With this in mind, what message are you going to present to the engineers attending the Congress?
