Extractions: PURSUIT OF PEACE ... RESOURCES In 1921, the Royal Swedish Academy awarded Alfred Einstein the Nobel Prize in physics for his experiments with the photoelectric effect. (CNN) A century ago, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy, the founder of a French peace society that laid a foundation for the United Nations. Today, as the Nobel committee prepares to announce its 100th awards, the organizations seeded by those two men are more viable than ever. So is the work of dozens of other Nobel laureates recognized over the decades in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics. Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Martin Luther King Jr., Linus Pauling, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Nelson Mandela and Samuel Beckett are some of the well-known recipients of Nobel prizes. While the prizes are among the most prestigious awards in the world, they are not without controversy. Nobel laureates were often at the forefront of dramatic change in the 20th century, which saw an accelerated rate of scientific discoveries, along with two world wars and tremendous social upheaval.

Extractions: Former Bell Labs Scientist Steven Chu Wins Nobel Prize Holmdel, N.J (October, 1997) An idea that sprang up over lunch at a Bell Labs cafeteria a little more than a decade ago has led Steven Chu to the most coveted honor in science. On Oct. 15, the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Chu, now at Stanford University, and two others, William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, for their development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Steven Chu The research that drew the attention of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences began at Bell Labs in Holmdel. A dozen years ago, Arthur Ashkin and Chu used to discuss physics regularly at the Holmdel cafeteria. They were interested in manipulating atoms at low temperatures. An idea that arose during one of those lunches led to a series of experiments by Chu, Ashkin, John Bjorkholm, Alex Cable, and Leo Holberg. Chu left Bell Labs in 1987 to take up a professorship at Stanford, where he continued his work in low-temperature physics. Ashkin Pioneered "Optical Trapping"

Extractions: ZURICH Elias Canetti, the reclusive writer who won the 1981 Nobel Prize in literature, died Sunday. He was 89. Mr. Canetti, a Bulgarian-born British citizen who wrote in German, was buried Wednesday in Zurich beside Irish author James Joyce. He went into seclusion after he won the prize. Mr. Canetti began writing dramas and novels in the early 1930s, but developed a wide following among German readers only in 1960 with the publication of the first volume of his major work, "Masse und Macht" (Crowds and Power). A nightmarish novel, "Die Blendung" (Auto da Fe), which he wrote in the early 1930s, was not published in Vienna until 1963. But his drama, "Die Hochzeit" (The Wedding), was published in 1932, and two years later he completed his "Komodie der Eitelkeit" (Comedy of Vanity). He was born on July 25, 1905, in Rustchuk, Bulgaria. In 1911, he moved with his parents to Manchester, England. When his father died two years later, he moved to Vienna, where he attended school before continuing his education in Zurich and Frankfurt.
